Sore throat...infection or acid reflux? - Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Hi Guys

I have had a mild sore throat since Feb 6 along with some burning in the stomach and stuffy nose. I have suffered from reflux in the past for 8 months straight. Now I think i have LPR to. Went to the doctors two weeks ago and am now on 80mg of nexium.

Wed. my throat got worse and my ear hurts. Went to the doctors and he said I have an ear infection and a little red throat. He put me on amoxicillin. Today my throat hurts a lot. I am wondering if reflux can cause the ear infection? Also thinking if I do have an infection or is it reflux.

I am so depressed feeling like this. the last time the burning lasted for 8 months. It is horrible that we all have to suffer this way. It seems that when we get it under control it last for a while then all #@%% breaks lose.

I think of scarey things like throat cancer. I never had a sore throat that lasted this long and which becomes worse. I see my gastro doctor next week. I am so done with all this.

My throat isn't sore but feels irritated all the time. I also have ear pain almost continually, sometimes unbearable. Dr. says my ears look normal so I am guessing it is referred pain which I understand is common with LPR. I have been suffering with this for a year. I am going for a second ENT opinion. I also think of the scary things. I think it's natural when you feel so awful for so long. Most days I feel pretty lousy.

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to hang in there. I had Gred with out LPR symptoms for 8 months and then little by little I began to feel a little human again. this lasted for 5 months and then get hit with it again plus the LPR symptoms. It is hard to stay postive these days. I know we all have them.

I just do not know what to think when the doc says it is an infection but something tells me it is not. I guess I should finish the antibiotics and then see. I hope it is an infection and gets better. If it is not then what can they really do. I have been through all the meds and nothing helps. Just want to feel and be normal again. It really changes our lives.

Good luck with your doctors' appointment, Tilly. I agree with you, this is no fun. I don't understand any of it. How can one go from having not a single symptom or a sign of any stomach problem to what I have now in a period of less than a year is beyond me. I have a feeling this is not going away. I wonder if the costly medication I take is just a waste of money. It seems to have made everything much worse.

I have the same problem - difficulty in determining what is a symptom of LPR or GERD and what isn't. Earaches are common with LPR for some reason. The throat problems are not unusual either. I had a stuffy nose and cold-like symptoms for months, non-stop. I guess that's the sinus thing, also common. I thought at first these symptoms were a side effect of one or more of my meds.

My experience sounds very similar to yours -- GERD symptoms started 7 months ago. Was put on omerperzole first (did nothing). Had an endoscopy in late November and there was no evidence of damage but there was a small hiatial hernia. Was then put on Nexium, which helped quite a bit and I was able to carry on daily activities without being bothered too much. Then about a month ago, the sore throat started, and the lump feeling, and the hoarseness. It's there every minute of the day. I'm going to see an ENT next week to see what else may be going on. I think it might now have progressed to LPR. Sigh.

I agree with you. I cannot understand how one can go from having absolutely no problems one day to full blown problems just days/months later. I can actually pinpoint the exact day when this all started last September and I haven't had a symptom-free day since.

I hope we can all find the answer to our problems one day!
