Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

I'm truly loosing my mind.I went to my thyroid Dr yesterday & she said my thyroid was fine.AHHHH,i was hoping that was my problem with feeling this lump in my throat & hard to swallow(even my own saliva) She is advising me to go to a GI Dr now.So lets see from one Dr to the next.I have been to over 5 at this point & now i'm worried my insurance will drop me thinking i'm crazy!! She thinks i might have a muscle problem with my esphogas.I already had the light ran down.THe ENT said all i had was a little acid relfux. There is just no way that is causing all this problems.I cant eat & i feel like there is somthing sitting on my chest & hard to breath. Why would i have to go to a GI Dr & please is there anyone out there that can give me some relief.I'm scared now to think i have to go somewhere else & still no answers.I just want to be normal again.I still cant belive that this has been going on for 5months now.ITs just getting worse with no relief. All of these meds i'm on havent helped at all. Thanks to all who gives me advise,my husband want talk to me anymore about this.So i have to vent & get answers somewhere. My Drs are sending me around & around....I'm in fear this is going to last forever!

I am so sorry to hear your having such a problem. I am having tons of problems to and its been going on since last may. So almost a year of this horror. I am going back to dr and I hope to finally get some tests done. Nothing seems to help. Cant seem to eat anything and I am misrable. My mouth tastes of acid all the time with little or no relief. I choke and have coughing fits. My stomach burns. I try to eat right and even the stuff that supposed to be ok to eat hurts. I dont know what to do but I am at my wits end to. I feel so bad for you because it seems there really isnt any relief for this problem. I also worry that I will have this forever, Now its been almost a year. It effects everything my mood my job I just dont know what to do.

Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

I am so sorry that you both are suffering so badly. I have been dealing with this for about 7 months now - it is AWFUL.... Mine is mostly centered around breathing problems which they say are caused by GERD/Acid and maybe asthma??? I have had over 13 Drs. appointments in the past 7 months... I have lost over 20 pounds, I do not sleep well and am a NERVOUS WRECK.....

Are either of you taking PPI's? I tired (4) different kinds and had too many side effects. I have tried modifying my diet, etc. NO HELP THERE.....

Next step is an Upper GI and tissue samples - also I have a hiatal hernia - they may have to repair that but want a closer look first.

Have either of you been scoped?

Good luck to us all......

I hear ya! Been there, done that! I got a second ENT opinion and I still have no answers. This has been going on for one year now. Both the ENTs I saw referred me to my neurologist because they think a lot of my symptoms are neurological. I have migraine disease also and my LPR symptoms are on the left side, just as my migraines are.My neuro can't find anything wrong either. I have that horrid lump in my throat all the time, too. Dr.s say my throat is okay, no tumors, cancer, infection, strictures etc. I took acid reflux meds last year with no results at all. I am like you............worried that I'll just keep getting passed around and eventually my insurance company will start questioning things. My hubby says that I will not be satisfied until I am diagnosed with something fatal! I try to explain to him that I do not want to feel awful every day of my life and I hate going to the dr. and having test after test done.

I don't have much advice for you. Just wanted you to know I understand how you feel and hope you find answers soon.

Hang in there!

Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

I have suffered with this lump in throat feeling off and on for several years now. Doc thought it could be from acid reflux...took meds, no help. Had some tests, all were fine. Do have two tiny thyroid nodules, but not large enough to cause this. Since all the docs say it's nothing I've figured it just must be a muscle spasm. I do get them in my neck and it interferes with the cervical curve so I've just assumed this causes it and try not to let it worry me too much. It IS annoying as sin though. Thankfully I do get relief from it as it comes and goes. Sometimes I have it for months and then it will be gone for longer. Have you tried a muscle relaxer or xanax? I don't usually push meds, but either of these may help relax that muscle (of course if it's not something else).

Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

hey yall... damn this thing.. tell you what i've had it for 2 months about every other 2 weeks.. and its horrible.. not that it hurts but b/c its constant!! it will drive a person insane... i've been reading alot and have had all the tests ran.. which includes: upper GI, ultrasound, scope.. i have ashtma but thats not it.. i know... they diagnosed me w/ acid reflux (LPR) i'm at the point where they said take the nexium for 6 weeks and i should see a significant change... i doubt i will.. feels to much like a spasm.. its like a the musle in your throat that allows food to go down is tense and stays like that.. i tried xanax, valium, flexiril.. none work.. i notice i feel it less when i eat... most of the time.. all of you hang in there.. i think this will pass for all of us.. i know the last time i had it, i started lexapro and it went away but gave me breathing problems like my chest had weights on it... but if any of you can tolerate lexapro or some type of anxiety med you could try that... even though it might of been a coincidence since the xanax didn't work

maybe we all have acid reflux.. i dunno.. do any of you get this worse after you finish working out at the gym? and feel like your ears need to pop along w/ the constricted throat feeling?

oh by the way .. if you haven't had the scope.. its very easy.. i requested no numbing medicine b/c i panic if my throat is numbed.. did not hurt a bit.. i actually talked to the doc while i had the damn scope in my throat, looking at my throat on the monitor. so no worries for anyone who wants to have it done.. and its only about 20 secs long

Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

Holly Cow, I am not alone. I have the same problem with my throat and it was all of a sudden over 5 weeks now and I also posted it here see: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?p=3653759#post3653759

Well it felt like a hand on one side of my throat and that was freaky. Being I rarely go to the doctors I had to go because I went back to smoking after 4 years when my dear father was dieing so the guilt of getting throat cancer was overwhelming. I had an ultra sound reviling a 3mm nodule on my thyroid but the thyroid radioactive scan shows the thyroid was working well. The Dr. said I could see an endocrinologist but the earliest appointment is Jan 30th so I made the appointment and then went to see an ENT specialist and he did a tube with camera up my nose and down my throat and said it looked fine, I was relieved. He said it may be acid reflux and prescribed Nexium but that stuff takes a while to start working and I feel like I am choking often. And I donít think it is acd reflux. So I now want to find a NYC Endo Dr. who will see me sooner. I also have more discomfort when I wear a tee shirt so I have to wear V-neck collars do any of you feel the same with the collars? The ENT specialist is going to do another ultrasound and if the nodule is 10mm I get a biopsy but I fear it will be 20mm in 6 months.

Good luck to all of you I am sure there is a reason for all of this and the more we search and share the closer we get to relief. And yes sleeping is tough I am ready for ambien : ) The throat mussel relaxers sound good too. I donít like taking drugs so I am going to my chiropractor which I havenít seen in a few years and have an adjustment and then Iím going to take some yoga classes as I havenít had a class or practice in 3 months so Iíll let you all know how that goes. BTW my spouse thinks it is in my head a little (like itís real but my body is making it because of stresses). I am under stress because my dad died and I have his estate woes but I am getting a handle of it all so I didnít think it was that. But I smoked my brains out for 3 months when he was and eventually died because I felt badly because I couldnít help him survive, it was extremely sad. Hey if all of this doesnít help Iím going to a therapist and Iíll take sedatives because this throat feeling is very scary. I totally understand what everyone is going through.
Positive energy is coming your way.
Peace,
Linda

Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

I can't believe I've found this site as I too have had a lump feeling in my throat for a few years now. The first Dr i saw was rubbish and thought it was all in my head. I had 2 scopes up my nose and down my throat but it didn't show anything. i then had a scope into my stomach and that showed I had acid reflux. I went on omeprazole for 6 weeks and the lump definately went away or at least it shrunk enough so I couldn't feel it. I've since had problems again but apparently this can happen as omeprazole stops your stomach producing as much stomach acid but you can't stay on it forever. I just don't get why no-one knows why some people's stomach;s produce too much acid. I've tried cuttin gout certain foods but it makes no difference, in fact I get acid reflux every day regardless as to what I eat, the portion sizes or when I eat. I notice it getting worse in the evening but I've never woken up in the night with it. I really want to try some herbal alternatives as I don't like taking drugs all the time. I also have asthma and when my asthma got bad in the summer because of hayfever and pollen the dr thought my acid reflux had come back and put me back on omeprazole. I ended up in A&E on a nebulizer.
it's good to read that other people are having the same symptons as its hard to explain to a dr the feeling og a lump in your throat all the time - they just think you are crazy. I had all the tests for thyroid, barium meal, x ray etc but really the best thing is to look inside at your stomach. it doesn't have to look really bad for you to get bad symptons.

Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

Hello all you Throaties....I know exactly how you are feeling. I hate to say this, but I have been dealing with this for 5 YEARS now. After all the initial, extensive tests, I too have no answers. My family doctor put me on a mild tranq. and after a month it did start to ease the symptoms...I stopped taking it because it made me tired and then bam....it is back with a vengence. I have the feeling of "just before you cry" when you try to hold back the tears and you get that strange feeling in your throat...only I have this all the time. All my tests come back ok...I even went as far as having my tonsils removed and as an adult that is definately NO FUN! Unfortunately that did not stop the problem. I have been to multiple doctors and had multiple tests. I am sad to say I don't know if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It is so depressing and scarey....my minds convinces me that the doctors have missed something. The harder I try to forget it, the worse it seems..I am reading a book now called, "Stop Worrying About your Health", it is a good book. You might want to try reading it. I feel for all of you ... at least we understand and know we aren't crazy...God Bless You all...

Unhappy Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

Hello, I know how everybody is feeling.I've been feeling a lump on my throat for about 3 months. I was so nervous at the beginning that I went to the ER thinking my throat was gonna close up. They gave me Ativans and said it was Anxiety, anyone could get anxious if you're feeling something constantly on your throat,I still had the feeling day after day and it's something you cant ignore it just drives you nuts.Well they did a UGI and it showed acid reflux they put me on prilosec but I still have the feeling but for some reason if I dont feel the throat discomfort I feel shortness of breath is one or the other. Has this happened to anyone?

Re: Lump in throat/sent to another Dr/please more advise!!

Hello Jessie 78
Sorry to hear you too are having this problem. Yes, I feel short of breath at times too. Recently I have had pains up and down my throat down into the pit of my stomach. Then I get nervous and it gets worse. Sometimes when I breathe it hurts into my back. I am so tired of this. I too had the test you had and they too told me I had GERD Acid Reflux and I took the tummy meds too...unfortunately they did nothing. Are you still taking the anti anxiety meds? I took some too and they did seem to help a bit, and at times it started to feel better but the last month it has been awful. I know what you mean about a constant nagging feeling in your throat making you nervous. I have always been a high anxiety personality...Sure wish I could get over this. I have had multiple tests over the past five years and "thankfully" every shows fine, then why do I have this problem. A friend said anxiety can cause spasms of the esophagus...Well, hope you are having a better day today..
