Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? I've had GERD for about 20 years now, I'm 37 years old. Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis. I can tell the difference already because the extreme nausea is from the Gastroparesis, the burning acidy stuff is GERD. I would take the reflux over the Gastroparesis in a heartbeat if I had a choice but I don't and I am very miserable having BOTH conditions together! Does anyone have both of these conditions and if so, what do you do for treatments? I am specifically looking for more alternative treatments for Gastroparesis? Anyone know anything about Gastroparesis and what might work to at least control it naturally? Currently I am taking Ginger for nausea, it is a life saver but I want something that can actually DO something to maybe kick the Gastroparesis if that's possible or at least not let it bother me so much. I'm thinking digestive enzymes could help but I don't know much about them. Thanks. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? I have had GERD for year. I began having breakthrough reflux even after taking Nexium. Dr. did upper endoscopy on Friday. I still had food in my stomach, he told me I had gastroparesis. He said Reglan was bad; had bad side effects; lawyers all over then not to prescribe. One drug was good & safe, but not available in US. My instructions are to take nexium once a day (he was bumping me up to twice), eat 5 or 6 smaller meals, take Ginger extract & low fat diet. What I don't know, is if I have always had it or this is something new. I have had upper endoscopies before, but they were ok. I don't have diabetes. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? Hi, I suffer with Gerd and have had dreadful feeling of Nausea. Since taking Aloe Vera Digestive Aid juice, I have found it to be very helpful. Also Motilium (Domperidone) is very good. You can buy it OTC where I live , but it is also available on Prescription. Ginger Tea is o.k. Eat small/often and I find I am better without sugar. Hope this helps. Solofelix. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? Hello everyone! I have recently been diagnosed with GERD and gastroparesis within the last two months. I am currently taking 20mg of Aciphex twice a day, metoclopramide (reglan) 3-4 times a day. It seems that they just are not helping. Not to mention when all this started I started having bowel issues that seem to not go away and cause so much distress in my life. I do not want to leave the house or go to work because I am always feeling sick. I have second opinion with a GI doctor this thursday so I am hoping that something will help there. Has anything changed for you? |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? Hi, ckpsyc. I have had GERD and gastritis for a while, and I've just recently been diagnosed with gastroparesis. I currently see a fancy GI at a teaching hospital, and he thinks that the GP caused the other two conditions: Food doesn't leave my stomach, so instead it sits around, causes irritation to the stomach lining and causes reflux. I am taking Domperidone, imported. It helps a LOT and it's so much less toxic than Reglan. I was on PPIs for a long time, they helped but they never seemed to help MUCH, probably because the motility issues weren't being addressed. Let me know if you want to chat. Jane. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? Hey jane, Thanks for writing back. As of now I'm taking the reglan but I feel as if it's not helping at all. I always feel nauseous and sick. It interfered with work already which is not good. I'm going to a new gastro doctor on Thursday to see what he says. I'm hoping something happens because for this to occur spur of the moment and to cause me so much grid it is crazy. Not to mention the bowel problem. It feels like IBS almost I would day but no one has told me that's what it is. I'm just nervous and scared and I don't know what to do anymore :-(. Did you get a script for the domperidone? Is it really helping? Did it take away the cramps bloating and nausea symptoms? |

DOMPERIDONE does help with the sick feeling and has no side effects (not for me anyhow). If you have cramps/bloating its possibly IBS. Have you had an Endoscopy if not I would ask for one if I was you to see whats going on. All the best, Solofelix. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? For me, the Domperidone keeps me from getting full so quickly and lets me eat things like whole grains and vegetables. (People with gastroparesis need to limit fiber intake, because fiber means extra work for the stomach. Eat your veggies well-cooked and in small portions, no salads.) It does help with nausea also. Compazine is good, too. I've had surgery a couple times this year, and the best part of the surgery is the anti-nausea meds I get beforehand! I keep meaning to get my doctor to write me a regular script for Compazine, but that hasn't happened yet, partly because I have other issues. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? Solofelix, I have had an EGD an that is where I was diagnosed with GERD and gastroparesis about a month and a half ago. I have been taking reglan but it's not working. One week I am fine the next week I am sick to my stomach that I feel like vomitting but never do. And I also was thinking I may have IBS as well but haven't been diagnosed with it yet. I am usually crampy and bloated. Jane, Perhaps I should ask about getting domperidone and see what happens because I don't think reglan is helping me much at all if I am always feeling nauseous. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? My daughter has both GERD and Gastroparesis. She is on Prevacid 30mg 2 times a day, and she was taking Reglan for Gastroparesis, but the side effects were pretty bad. Is anyone here on Domperidone? And if so, where do you get your prescriptions filled? |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? you can have GERD because your are having delayed gastric emptying... when the food is moving slowly through the pyloric valve area, it has a greater chance of going back up your throat causing reflux... i was diagnosed back in feb 2011, with gastroparesis, with a 1 hour emptying test - then i went to a specialist in may, and he did a 4 hour test, and said i didnt have gastroparesis... what tests did you have to diagnosis gastroparesis? |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? As of now my doctor did a EGD and that is how he found out. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? I have GERD. Diagnosed last year. Whenever GERD flares, I will get a breathless sensation like something choked on the lower part of my throat. I burp every other seconds. Chocolate is the worst trigger for me. Currently I am on Domperidone and Pariet. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? Hey, myzaqy. I get those symptoms, too. Weirdly enough, chocolate is usually fine for me, at least in moderation, but I can't even think about drinking coffee. Just goes to show, triggers vary from one person to the next. |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? I have GERD and Gastroparesis as well. Actually the two go hand in hand. I Take a medication called Domperidone to help the food move through the stomach faster. I take Prevacid for the GERD. Both have worked very well. It is very important to eat small, fequent meals, especially if you are prone to attacks. Fibre is not your friend!! So remember to stick to a low fibre, low fat, high protein diet. I have also heard that digestive enzymes and probiotics are supposed to help with food absorption and bloating. I have started taking both...too early to tell results, but its worth a try. I am assuming you have had the gastric emptying study which ultimately confirms diagnosis of Gastroparesis? Take care and stay healthy!! |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? I myself have beens suffering from gastro for about a yr now and I can tell you sometimes are better than others. Have you tried Domperidone? Its not approved in the US but it def does help with the issue. Hope this has helped and if anyone else has any other ideas for this please let me know, it would really be appreciated!!! |

Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? I just got diagnosed with gastroparesis too---It is horrible---I had my gallbladder removed in August of this year and experienced constant nausea for 5 months--I also have had gerd which only came up after my gallbladder removal on aug, 5th of this year----I take 40 mg protonix in the morning, 150mg. zantac at night, carafate with lunch and dinner and erythromycin twice a day for the gastroparesis----I feel pretty well for the first time in 4 months---how are you doing and what has worked for you? |
Re: Anyone with both GERD and Gastroparesis? I also have GERD and Gastroparesis. My GERD is also aggrevated by a hiatal hernia, but the Gastroparesis flared it up this year (stomach slowed down more and reflux kicked in full force)! I take Dexilant for the GERD, but currently don't take anything for the GP (just eat small portions, low-fat and low-fiber - that last one is the hardest :( - I miss my fruits and veggies more than I miss the fat). My GI doc wanted me to try Domperidone and I still might, but I am always afraid of side effects (if there is a weird side effect that only one percent of the people get, it's usually me ;) and Domperidone has heart side effects they have recently discovered, though rare, I am sure - all meds have possible dangerous side effects for a few, so I should just try it). |
