Paying the price, up in the night

I am so angry with myself. I have been doing well with my foods and last night my husband and I decided to go out for a nice meal. We ate about 8 pm. I knew it was too late but I wasn't through working until just before then. I was so hungry so we ate an appetizer and we had steak dinners. It was a heavy meal. And I splurged and had two glasses of wine. And we had dessert too. I was all just too much for me. But I hadn't eaten like that in months. I was just so hungry. It felt so good at the time.

Dear God I am paying the price. I woke up at 4:30 am with the worse reflux and stomach pain. I feel like I could vomit. I don't want to. I am taking Tums and sitting upright and trying to pray through the pain. I feel like the food is just sitting there in my stomach and won't go down. I am so mad, I just can't ever have a normal meal like that again. It's clear that I have a problem digesting food, expecially like that. I am so angry that this perimenopause and hormone fluctuation is effecting my whole body.

I just had every test you could imagine done on me. They all came back fine except the low hormones, (Testosterone and Progesterone) so how does anyone deal with this? I am so frustrated. This is so hard dealing with the diet thing.

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

Ouch, sorry to here of your suffering. I think taking digestive enzymes would be of use to you, especially after such a meal. Your pancreas secrets these enzymes to break down the food, taking these enzymes orally assists this process and supplements any lack of production your body may not be producing. You can get them at a health food store, even a grocery market or wallmart. But they would do nothing for the acidic red wine that may have been effecting you.

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

I have those but forgot to take them before the meal. I thought I was doing good until the middle of the night. Ugh! I had white zin wine.

It has been 14 hours since I ate that meal. I have only had a couple of sips of water and a few saltine crackers. I am not hungry yet. I am just REALLY, REALLY sore in the stomach and in the pipe coming up out of my stomach. How long does this last before the food clears out? Or shall I say the soreness from eating the bad food and late at night? I am so tired of this!

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

The white wines are not as acidic (i think). I have taken the digestive enzymes shortly after i ate before, i think they still have an useful effect. Especially if the food is still sitting there. But this should not apply for you now. A gastric emptying study determines how fast you digest your food. The test takes 90 mins. Based on that, i would say they expect food to be leaving your stomach before 90 mins. If you still have discomfort or pain you believe is caused from that meal, i would think you may be dealing with gastritis or something more. Try some pepto bismuth and/or some gaviscon. See if that does not provide some immediate relief.

I find it useful to sleep in a comfortable chair sometimes. It keeps gravity on your side, pushing the food in the right direction, alleviating possible further developments from the indulgence. Propping my bed pillow 6" just does not cut it sometimes.

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

Thanks for your help Beeb. I had an Endoscopy done in Jan. They even went into part of the upper intestine. Doctor said it was all clear. I am glad but what am I dealing with?? Is this just me aging at 44 and I can't eat like that?? Apparently I have really irritated my stomach. It is coming up on 15 hours since I ate that meal. I think it took awhile to pass through my stomach and intestines. Not to tell ya too much, but I have been to the restroom 6 times with number 2. LOL I don't think there is anything left in there. I just feel the soreness of all the bad food.

I know they say not to eat so late because your body needs to rest in the night. Instead I made my stomach work all night digesting rich food.

I may try the pepto bismal. I am scared of some meds. I took Immodium AD a year ago and broke out in hives and had to go in for a couple steriod shots. Right now I am just taking Tums.

Should I take a Prilosec or something like that?

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

Prilosec is an acid pump inhibitor. You typically follow a course of 2 weeks to allow yourself to heal from stomach inflammation, ulcer, gastritis, using these drugs, or you have a constant over production of acid problem that needs constant control. If you only suffer occasionally, i would suggest you try pepcid complete or tagament. Something designed to work more quickly and temporary. The quickest is the pepto or gaviscon. Imodium AD is for slowing the rhythm of digestion, ie. diahrea. The others are acid neutralizing (although pepto is for both). Imodium has different ingredients then pepto, loperamide vs Bismuth Subsalicylate, thus, i would not expect an allergic reaction. Gaviscon is also totaly different. All that is to say, dont fear an allergic reaction because the other drugs are not similar to Imodium AD. But, obviously you can be allergic to other things though.

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

Thanks! You have been a great help! I will try some Pepcid! I have a box right here. I pretty much have a pharmacy here at the house. Just incase any of us need anything. I am picky about taking anything though. At this point I am desparate. I need something fast acting.

God bless! Thanks for your help!!!

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

Much better today thanks! It took me a day to recover from the meal. Ugh! Today I did well all day. Really watching what I eat. This evening I feel a little touch of it. I had a shot of liquid vitamins and they are so potent. I do think they are hard on the stomach. I ate a banana first. This really is a touchy thing to deal with.

How are you doing?

Re: Paying the price, up in the night

That really sucks. You slip up one day and it all comes crashing down...

I had really bad reflux last night, and the thing that fixed it was peppermint tea with honey mixed in. After drinking some, it was so much better.

I totally feel you on the not wanting to vomit thing. I also hate vomiting (who doesn't?) and I'm paranoid of missing the toilet/not getting there in time.

Good luck-I hope you're feeling better soon
