Starting back on some Prilosec

It was this time exactly last year that I was posting about my acid reflux which I thought was practically asthma. I feel like my throat is tight and closing up. Mucus galore! I have even wondered if I have lung cancer or something. I have never smoked a cigarette or anything in my life! I have been exposed to second hand smoke. So I don't know.

I have decided to go back on the Prilosec until I can get a prescription of something similiar. Does anyone know how long I can tell if this stuff starts working again? I need to clear up the mucus. Maybe that will help my labored breathing and constant throat clearing. I just pray to God this isn't serious. Maybe my allergies are just way out of hand. I am congested ALOT!! I think I have become numb to my allergies because I have had them all my life and am used to suffering that maybe I don't realize they are causing the reflux.

Help please.. thanks!

It takes time. You may start to see some improvement in 2-4 weeks but it can take 3 months to really get things back under control.

You can help the situation by making some lifestyle changes:
-Avoid trigger foods like chocolate, tomato-based sauces, alcohol, coffee, etc.
-Raise the head of your bed 4-6 inches to help keep the acid where it belongs (using a pillow to prop up your head won't really help).
-Eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed
You really have to stick with it for a while to see improvement.

Re: Starting back on some Prilosec

Could the mucus be a sinus infection? Just draining down my throat?

It could be but it's likely that you would have other symptoms of a sinus infection (sinus pain/pressure, thick green mucus, feeling tired, fever).

GERD can definitely cause the symptoms you describe so it's tough to tell if there's something else contributing the excess mucus.

Re: Starting back on some Prilosec

I just had a horrible spell of pollen, mucus, chest congestion - my stomach was so upset with the belching and gas. Your stomach will produce mucus went you have congestion in your nose. I just went to the allergist - he suggested me to keep my nose clean with saline, a salt solution nose wash and drink plenty of fluids.

Re: Starting back on some Prilosec

This is all confusing for me. I just went to the after hours clinic for my mucus and breathing problem tonight. This particular doctor laughed at me about the acid reflux thing. He didnt think that at all. He didn't believe in the "silent reflux" thing we you get mucus galore but don't feel much burning. I told him that the mucus just starts going to protect the throat.

He listened to my lungs...said they sounded fine. I said what is causing all the drainage?? And my chest feels tight. I feel like I can't get a full breath in without making an effort. It's an uncomfortable feeling. He told me he thought it was all drainage from my sinus's because I wasn't coughing up anything. Hmmmm....then he came to the conclusion that I am having anxiety issues and said that it would be a good idea to go on some xanax. I am up for that. I hope that he has diagnosed things correctly. But I still think I should treat the acid reflux because I do think I have that too. If I treat it all maybe I will get everything back under control. I hope!

Anyone else feel like this?

Re: Starting back on some Prilosec

Every doctor has their own opinion. It is true about the muscus though so he is wrong. I have anxiety and panic attacks - right now I have anxiety because I don't know what is wrong with me - I don't know if I have acid reflux or gerd but it is getting me depressed. I have to wait a whole month before I get tested to find out. When you call the gasterologist, they are so busy they don't call you back.

Anxiety saps the energy out of you like stress does. I guess the best thing for you to do is relax, meditate, and don't worry so much. I am trying to do the same. I just went through what you did a month ago when the pollen season just started. I had a tight chest, mucus, I kept clearing my throat and I felt like I couldn't breath. I went to the doctors twice so they could check my chest. They put me on nasal sprays and a inhaler. I kept producing extra muscus and swallowing it. My stomach felt so horrible. I got through it and when the pollen cleared then I felt totally better. I guess if you acid reflux or gerd you get worse than other people.

I just wish I could wake up one morning and feel great.

What you're dealing with isn't something that's going to get treated at an after hours clinic. You really need to see a gastroenterologist who is trained to treat acid reflux (and probably a pulmonologist as well).

The fact that your lungs sounded fine increases the likelihood that it's LPR (LPR causes asthma-like symptoms without the inflammation of the bronchi in the lungs).

I know it's a challenge finding the right doctors but, in the long run, you'll be much better off if you see someone who really knows what they're talking about.

that is what I have my allergies trigger asthma like symptoms and they put me on Advair. I agree after hour clinic are useless - they just confirm that your still alive in my opinion - you need specialists

Re: Starting back on some Prilosec

Thanks all of you! I do need to see a specialist. I don't think the regular doctors are equipped to deal with reflux and all of it's tricky issues. Mine is coupled with anxiety. I went ahead and went to another doctor at my regular clinic this morning. She also said my lungs sound clear, she doesn't even think I have a sinus infection. She believes I have post nasal drip that comes with allergies and reflux. She has prescriped me a reflux med which I need to go get plus both doctors agree I need to be on some xanax as needed because of the extreme stress I am under. I really do feel like the mucus makes me feel like I have asthma. They don't hear wheezing but I made the first doctor prescribe me an inhaler. I sound like a mess don't I ? I am really frustrated because I just wish I had one doctor to help me with EVERYTHING!

I am right there with you - I wake every morning wondering what will the day bring me. I am getting pretty sick and tired of this whole situation. I swear I just went through the same thing like you just did with the mucus. I thought my lungs were congested and I kept coughing up mucus. It is true what your doctor said about the nasal drip and then you swallow it and what makes it worse is that you have acid reflux. Then your stomach produces mucus so it makes you feel like your chest is tight. My doctor and allergist explained everything to me. I went into panic when this was going on because I just want to feel good for just one day. It will pass and just take one day as it comes. Worrying and panic or anxiety will make it worse. Right now I am going through some anxiety - I can't figure out what is causing all this pain in my stomach. I went to see the gasterologist and I am scheduled for a scope to be done. I am scared to death because I don't know what they will find. Everyone keeps telling me it is gas or gerd but I can't believe gerd does this. I am taking Pantoprazole and it doesn't work. Today I had an episode belching and pain in my stomach. I tried to call my gasterologist but they are tied up in surgery. I haven't eaten anything but oatmeal and chicken broth. Do you go through this?

Re: Starting back on some Prilosec

Bless your heart gigi11. Yes I do know what you are going through, and yes I have going through bouts of this. There are times when I am down to an extremely bland diet. I have days where I have chicken noodle soup and cream of wheat. At my worst I have had a searing burning pain in my sternum area between my breasts where the food goes down. I thought I was having a heart attack. Wow did that hurt! I was afraid to eat, drink, swallow or breathe. I really believe mine is stress induced, plus I could stand to loose a good 25 pounds. I am working on it.

Tonight the mucus is worse again. I didn't eat the best today, plus I just did two days of jury duty. I got released today. Thank God! I almost made it onto the jury of a one month trial but they knew I was stressed. A person had been killed and I just didn't want to see the pictures. I don't need this. Not now.

I would give anything to get over this or just get it under control. It is clearly out of control right now. I keep clearing my throat. There is a ball of mucus in the back of my throat. This evening I do feel burning up in the sternum area. It's my fault! I had a margarita today to celebrate being off of the jury. I knew I would pay later. But I still have felt bad without doing this so I thought, what the heck!!

Tomorrow I am suppose to pick up a new prescription at Walmart of a different kind of acid reflux med. I hope it will work. I just need to stay on some of these for awhile and be so faithful with the foods I eat. I just can't believe I have this problem. Perhaps I don't handle stress like my other family members, Or maybe it is a disease?? And if so, does that mean we have it forever?

Sometimes I can't even bend my back it is such a tight feeling. I don't have chest pain - my pain is in the stomach and then flows to my waist where my liver is and then the opposite side so then my mind wonders and says (do I have liver cancer or stomach cancer?) - Why do I have bouts of this? Like for two weeks I feel ok and then I have an attacks which comes from no where. It will last for 3 to 7 days. I know what you mean about the pictures in jury duty - here you are feeling nausau or pain in the chest and you have to look at pictures that would make you more sick. I don't know if this is all stress. The only stress I have is that my husband changed jobs and he is not happy. The bad economy prevents me from taking any vacations and I had to cut out other luxuries. I had other bouts before and there was no stress - so I can't explain all this. I notice when I have an allergy attack, or virus my stomach is the first to react and get sick. My doctor explained that when you get a virus and have no gallbladder your stomach produces lots of acid. I was leading a good life before I had my gallbladder taken out. I don't drink, smoke, eat fatty foods. I exercise everyday and I am on a diet losing 2lbs a week average. I am on a very bland diet and I miss salads!!! I don't eat out. I beginning a fear of eating because I will pay for it later. I beginning to lose faith because I see all these people on the board who have tried every medicine in the book and no relief. Is this all in our minds or something? I cannot live like this because I am not myself - I am grouchy, nasty and I just want to be by myself. What to do????

Re: Starting back on some Prilosec

Thanks for sharing again gigi. Today has been a rough one again for me. Lots of mucus. I haven't had a Prilosec since yesterday at 4:30 PM. The package says only take 1 a day. But it seems to me I have seen people take more than one a day. Like maybe 2 a day. One in the morning and one at night.

The Prevacid they gave me is 30 mg a day. One capsule. I have a friend who thinks I am just under so much stress that my mucus production is going crazy. I don't know....maybe if I took some of my xanax that would calm me down and perhaps I would be less stressed and produce less stomach mucus. ??? Any thoughts on that??

Right now I am just trying to reduce the mucus and not panic. I can not cheat with foods at all. Is it safe to it lettuce? I know it's hard to digest. I know that tonight I will have an apple, carrots, celery, and a protein shake. I hope the berries will be ok to have in it. I would do mixed berries, Stawberries, or blueberries. Heck there isn't much on the menu. My hubby is going to pick me up some lean smoke turkey. I hope that is ok.

I am just sitting here trying not to think I have lung cancer or thyroid cancer or something I have never smoked in my life.

I hope you are having a good day. Thanks for talking with me!

I am just sitting here crying my eyes because I am thinking the worst. I went to the doctors last night because I am sick of the whole thing. He told me to eliminate the tricor I was taking because it irritates gallbladder disease. I am also eliminating the stomach acid reliever pill. He is putting me on Quantum powder and this is what is used for people who have had the gallbladder removed. He thinks my bile is emptying in my stomach and I am not fully emptying if that makes sense. The problem is not knowing what is wrong with you and you have to take numerous tests to find out and then they come out fine so what is the problem?? I can't even drink green tea or coffee the simple things bother me. Yesterday, all i had was oatmeal, chicken and yogurt and that bothered me. Am I almost dead or do I have cancer?? My doctor said it is highly unlikely you have cancer.

I think you should eliminate processed food like smoked turkey. It took me over 2 weeks to get over the mucus in the chest. So it takes time. Just cook the chicken breast yourself, carrots, green beans are good. Lettuce produces gas.

I just don't know what to do with myself i feel hopeless.
