Unhappy Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

I'm just beginning with these symptoms and have been taking prilosec x2 for about 3 weeks now, but still have days where I experience chest discomfort/pain and burning.

I do have the mucous thing going on right now too...this started about 2 weeks ago and causes much excessive swallowing and anxiety...could this cause muscle strain in the chest that would result in chest pain? It is kind of like when a swallow and the mucous will not go...it feels like my chest muscles are pulling and tightening and it is painful. Then I usually feel the burn for a bit.

This is so frustrating. I have not been diagnosed with anything yet, only given prilosec by my GP after last visit, then upped to 2x a day when it was not effective.

Every time I feel pain in my chest and burning, my anxiety increases and seems to make the pain / burning / swallowing worse.

Any words will be appreciated. Very upset over not feeling well. I have better days than others but the ups and downs of this is driving me nuts and the constant mucous in my throat/chest is so annoying it's hard to think of anything else.

I have no trouble at night with burning, pain or anything else. I'm usually fine for a few hours in the morning (thought the mucous is there, it isn't as bad) but gradually through the day, my symptoms worsen.

I've cut out coffee and soda.....what I eat doesn't seem to matter as I can get the heartburn/pain before I even eat anything. But I am trying to be careful about eating lower fat foods and no spicy foods.

Again, any words would be appreciated. I'm calling my GP tomorrow for another appointment and I'm hoping for some answers.

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

I started getting this pain in 2007, and had no clue what it was. The pain started when I laid down to go to sleep and in the middle of my chest. I could feel the pain getting worse and worse as time went by, and it slowly creeped up to the upper chest and then it went around my back. The pain was so unbearable that I started throwing up. Nothing I did would alleviate that pain!! Standing, sitting or lying down....all the same, and constant throwing up.

I was so incredibly scared!! I ate half a bottle of tums and go into the doc's office who also prescribed Prilosec. I was on Prilosec for many months and then went off and everything was fine for a year. The doctor ordered tests but could not find anything and just about a week ago, the pain came back worse as before. I'm back on Prilosec and I went to see the doc again but she didn't seem too concerned.
Next time it happens, I'm going to ER. I am going to let them run tests on me cuz I know I'm not making up THAT kind of pain!!

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

Hello MLB65, You have described my symptoms to a tee!! It has been over a year now with this going on and off for me. Last year this time, the mucus and tight chest started for me. I thought I was getting asthma. It really scared me. I took a puff of a family members inhaler, but it didn't do much for me. I was put on Prilosec and took it faithfully for 6 weeks. It took care of my problem but then I gradually went off of it and just did Tums. But by fall I was back in trouble. Then at Christmas things got bad again. I went in for an Endoscopy in Jan. this year. The doctor found nothing wrong. Somehow I made it to spring....and now it's June and the mucus is BAD!! I have bad allergies anyhow so you have to know some of it is from that. But this is definately acid reflux.

I have tons of mucus that I can't clear. It makes it hard to breath and I am sure this is how asthma must feel. Then I panic and my chest gets tight. Sometimes I have burning in my sternum area where the acid reflux comes up. Sometimes my chest muscles hurt from a little nagging cough and clearing all day long. Tonight is hot and humid and I felt my chest closing in. I had to get inside into the air conditioning just so I could breath. This kind of wether is hard on people with acid reflux, allergies and asthma. It makes it really hard to breathe because the air is so thick.

I am like you....I wake up and feel best in the morning when it comes to the mucus thing. But as the days goes on it gets worse and worse. I clear my throat over and over...my chest muscles feel so over used. By evening and can be pretty bad off. I have to sit still and put a movie in and try to relax other wise I will have a panic attack. I have been to the ER plenty of times for this. This is no way to live!!!

So to this day no one has diagnosed me with anything. Not even asthma. My guess is I have bad allergies and silent reflux. That is when you don't always feel the burn, but I watch everything I eat and the mucus comes up into my throat and you drives me nuts.

I am Prevacid now for almost a week. It is working a bit. I have seen a homeopathic type nurse. She is going to test me for a bunch of things and I am going on a product that will help my digestive track all the way through. Hopefully when I get my stress reduced too I am not have to take Prevacid forever.

I do hope you are feeling better. Hang in there! I know sometimes it doesn't matter what I eat. It flares up when it wants to. It baffles me.

And Rockford2, I hope you are feeling better also. At my worst I had a searing pain go through my chest. I thought I was having a heart attack. I was just having terriable reflux. I ate so bland for days. I have been just drinking water and gatorade for weeks. I do have my days of cheating. Don't get me wrong. lol I hope you are finding something that works for you too.

Always here to talk!

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

Thanks for your replies. I hope everyone is having a good day today. I agree the mucous has to be related to the heartburn issue. Mine just seem to all come on so fast it is scary. Never had heartburn in my life until now....at least that I know of. I'm an anxious / nervous person and I'm laid off from my job right now and dealing with a lot of stress. I think this is all contributing.

My doctor also recently put me on a medication for slight hypothyroidism...so I have no clue if the mucous thing has anything to do with my thyroid either. All my other blood work came back good. I do have Discoid Lupus (which affects skin only) and have taken a prescription anti- inflamatory for several years.

Thanks for all your advice and experience. I will let you know if I find anything else out.

I had never had pain like that in my life! I also had indigestion and I'd pop a tum and it would go away. I was never so scared when that pain first hit me. Thanks, and I hope everyone has a good day today too!!

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

HI again ladies! I hope you are having a great day. The mucus thing usually isn't involved with the low thyroid. I have had the low thyroid for 5 years about and the mucus thing only started a year ago.

I think the stress things has ALOT to do with this. I am looking for a job too! My husband and I are trying to save our dream house that we bought 3 years ago. We may loose it by Oct. So as you can see I am really under stress. I pray I make it through this and that my health issues will clear up too.

I pray you find a job and that you will feel better soon MLB65!! JUst remember...you are not alone ok!

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

I suggest to all of you with these symptoms to see a Gastro Specialist and have an endoscopy. That's the only way you will get an accurate diagnosis and correct treatment. I don't wish to frighten you but I lost a friend 3 days ago to eosophogeal cancer that had spread to his liver. He initially presented with typical gerd systems. I'm not suggesting any of you have anything sinister but you need to get an accurate diagnosis. Best wishes.

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

I had an endoscopy done in Jan. this year. The doctor found absolutely nothing in there. So now what?? You see I have to treat it the best I can. I can't be put under every month for them to keep checking. I think they only do it every so often. Expecially if nothing at all is found.

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

I don't know what the answer is for us. I had a good report like you, yet I suffer. I cried about how bad I have been feeling with this tonight. I don't mean to be a big baby. I know plenty of people suffer worse than I. All we want to do is feel better. The Prevacid and Prilosec do help my reflux, Thank God! But at the same time they give me other problems with my bowels and give me a gassy stomach. So which is worse? I just want to lay and cry. I can't win. I cry out to God and just ask Him to help me. And to not let me go through anything more than I can handle. And I pray my stress level goes down so I don't have to live like this. I too have anxiety and this set off panic attacks with me and I have made trips to the ER for this. I am just tired of it. You are right, it's no way to live.

Here to talk anytime....I pray we all find healing!

P.S. Michmob, I am so sorry that your trip to Italy was ruined by your pain. I am so sorry. Maybe there will be another trip in the future full of happiness and painfree for you!

Re: Do you experience chest pain with acid reflux?

Oh I'm sorry I mustn't have read your posts properly. I'm glad you have all had endoscopies. I'm a bit paranoid about that subject at the moment, i have to face my friend's funeral this week and all I can think about is why didn't he have it checked sooner instead of swallowing over the counter ant-acids.
I can't really help any of you with your suffering. I have mild gastritis a hiatal hernia and reflux which was diagnosed from an endoscopy and it's all contolled very well with Nexium.
Sounds horrible what you are suffering, I hope you all find answers and get some relief soon.

Update

It's been a while, though I have continued reading and looking for answers. A lot has happened since I first posted.

First, I did go back to my GP but not until after I had to have oral (dental) suregery. After this surgery I was given of course pain medication (narcotics) that I had to take for about a week. At first, I felt great. Everyone kept asking if my heartburn/chest pain were better because they could tell I felt so good, and it was! But.....I kept thinking...but I'm on pain medication....so not sure if that is why. I was also taking anti-biotics at the time as well and I wondered if that was why I felt so much better. Anyway, toward the end of that week on pain meds, my symptoms became way worse than ever before. My chest seemed to hurt everywhere. My back burned so bad I couldn't stand for very long and I would be constantly rubbing my back and shoulders. I made a trip to Ohio to see my only granddaughter who was turning one and I was literally miserable the entire time, trying to just put on a happy face, but with the pain constantly there and the anxiety increasing.

As soon as I got back from my trip, I made appt. with my GP. I told her things were not better but worse. I told her about the horrible pain in my back between my shoulder blades. I told her the chest thing was now way more pain than burning and indegestion was strong even after sipping water. The mucouls (she called globulus) or feeling of lump in throat was worse and driving me crazy. I still could not and can not contribute the pain to a particular food other than I know I can't drink coffee and raw veggies are pretty much out. Other than that I can't determine the effects of different foods.

So, I've had an abdominal ultra sound (checking gallbladder) which doctor said is fine, but....might need another test hideascan (something like that) if no answers and symptoms don't improve.

I've been to GI and had endoscopy last Wednesday...he also started me on Kapadex which I have been taking for 20 days now. After the endoscopy, he came in and said I had some acid reflux and gastritis, and gave me some information on GERD. He said that I had a small amount of bile in my stomache that we "might" have to invesitgate further...and I don't know what that means or what bile in your stomach might mean. He also scheduled me for an Esophageal Manometry which I was supposed to have this Thursday, but has to be rescheduled. Oh....btw, they did do biopsy or biopsies...but I have not heard anything back on those yet. What he wrote on the initial findings was "reflux esophagitis" and "gastritis". Anyone know how long it takes to hear back on biopsy?

He said he wanted to do the Manometry because I am still having symptoms. I'm assuming too because I told him that I have pain in my chest when swallowing (not my food or drink) but my normal swallowing...like muscles are tugging. I'm not thrilled about having to have this test done. I'm hoping it is not unneccesary. I'm just weary from feeling like this and not responding to the medications they have tried. Anyone else have this test done? Get any answers? I was told it is uncomfortable but not as bad as you think? I'm having some anxiety over the test as well.

On top of all that, my GP wants to run a full round of blood work even though it was all done 3 months ago when all of this started. Thank goodness for my insurance, but the copays/dectables are starting to hurt. I feel like all I do is go to doctors appointments or have tests and still keep feeling worse and worse. Makes me feel like they are missing something completely...sigh.

Sorry for the book, but I felt I should come in and update, rather than just post and then not let anyone know what has been going on.
