bile reflux questions

First a bit of background. 24 years old, male. About 7 months ago I suddenly had a nausea after dinner and by night I had vomited. From then on I have been having this nauseous feeling in the back of my throat. I have had an upper endoscopy performed where bile reflux was diagnosed and I have been on several drugs including but not limited to (if I can spell these right) sucralfate, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, omeprazole, Imipramine(apparently one doctor thought I was depressed), ranitadine .

None of the medications have had any immediate positive effects. As for long term effects, I am not ?really sure if I have been getting better, I think I feel better now than I did 6 months ago but it maybe just that I haven't been doing any work lately and have just been sleeping around.

My question is that if its normal for a doctor to write a prescription and send you away for a month? I feel like this scheme has wasted a lot of my time.

Secondly although a dozen blood tests showed that nothing else was wrong with me, but given that I have spent the last 6 months being treated for bile reflux with no prevail, I am beginning to suspect that the reflux is not my primary problem. Any comments?

And finally, what's in these pills? I feel like my life is sucked out of me.

Meanwhile I'll go and get some apple cider vinegar, some people in the forum seem to swear by it.

Re: bile reflux questions

I have no gallbladder and I basically had to diagnose myself and find my own medicine to present to the doctor. I had so many test and my endoscopy showed non specific gastritis and some bile. Never diagnosed me for anything. Basically the doctors were useless. I am starting to have no faith in doctors and have gone holistic. I now go to a acupuncturist. My symptoms are indigestion, bloating, nausea sometimes, and phantom pain. My last and final test is coming up colonoscopy. I am taking welchol to absorb the bile which I think is the problem. I think most of my problems is stress, anxiety.

I do think doctors are too quick to give prescription and send people off not to listen to their symptoms. Have you gotten a new doctor that someone could recommend. Did you look up the medicine online to see the side effects?

Re: bile reflux questions

Yes I think you are right. I actually just changed my doctor (about two weeks) but I haven't taken his prescriptions yet. Currently I have decided to stay off the pills (five days now) for a while and see how I get on if all goes well I'll stay like this else take the new prescriptions.

Thanx anyway. Its good to know that doctors are like this all over the world!

And I haven't tried the apple cider vinegar yet.

Are you going to a gastro specialist? Have you had a laparoscopic exam?

Re: bile reflux questions

Hi Gigi,

I too have given up the faith with drs. I have bile reflux and mild gastritis that started 3 days after my gallbladder surgery in Jan 09. I've been living in pain and discomfort since. I've lost so much weight. And I can not get away from the pain and yucky feelings. Can you tell me if the Welchol is helping? I do have some diarrhea but it's not always. I'm thinking I tend to be a bit more on the constipated side if I didn't take extra fiber. I've tried everything to try and soak up the bile except something like Welchol. I was going to try Activated Charcoal next.

Thanks!
Liz

Yes I have done really well on the Welchol - i have no diarrhea at all. I couldn't live without this medicine. I have less stomach upset. I only get upsets if I eat at restaurants. I get all kinds of weird pains (phantom pains) -- I meditate alot to try to get rid of the phantom pains.

Re: bile reflux questions

Gigi,

Did you have bile reflux? And if so, the Welchol helped with this?

Thanks!

Re: bile reflux questions

Haven't been diagnosed with it but Welchol helps with my digestion and I no longer have diarrehea so that works for me. My gasterologist did not want to pursue anymore test on me because he thought it was all in my mind. It was all real it just they don't want to admit that something could go wrong after gallbladder surgery.
