Lightbulb LPR - Throat Wheezing/Shortness of Breath

Hi all,

I've been dealing with LPR for the last year or so now, and some days are better than others. Lately, I've been having problems with throat wheezing, voice loss, and shortness of breath. I've already had a Methacholine challenge done, and they've concluded that the wheezing is coming from my larynx, and I don't have Asthma, but to be on the safe side, I'm going to have the test repeated this Thursday.

My Pulmonologist feels that I am suffering from VCD, as a direct result of the LPR, so I am scheduled to see a Larynologist in another week. When I try to talk, if it's over a few minutes, I get really hoarse, and I start to lose my voice, on top of that I start to get really short of breath and my throat begins to feel swollen. I also have chronic nasal congestion, and near constant throat clearing.

My question is this: Is there anyone else out there who has LPR and suffers from these symptoms? Specifically the throat wheezing and shortness of breath?

Thanks,

Michelle

Re: LPR - Throat Wheezing/Shortness of Breath

I have LPR too.

I never had a problem with wheezing, but I did have a lot of problems with my breathing, a chronic cough and lots of sinus problems.

I worked with an ENT, a Gastroenterologist and a Pulmonologist.

My Pulmonologist did a Modified Barium Swallow/ Esophagram on me and I found that I had acid that was irritating my lungs and triggering my asthma.

After a long process of trying various strategies to help my symptoms, I eventually opted for reflux surgery. My breathing and coughing improved immediately. One of the other "side effects" of the surgery has been a significant decrease in my sinus problems.

My mom has LPR with the vocal issues. Her ENT is working with her on this and treating her issues from a variety of ways. She is even getting speach therapy for her related vocal issues.

I am going through some of the same systoms right now.Wheezing in my throat, alot of drainage and coughing.Did you ever have a feeling your throat is being attacked where you feel like you will not be able to get your breath?
I have been to a GI a an ENT doctor and tomorrow I have another appointment with an ENT because I am having alot of problems again.I feel for every one of you with this problem it can take control of your life and makes you miss out on a lot of life's normal pleasures.

Re: LPR - Throat Wheezing/Shortness of Breath

Folks, it somewhat of a comfort to hear of all of you symtoms (sorry). I too have had a lot of issues with sinus, throat burning, voice problems etc etc although not the wheezing or lung problems.

I have been on ppi's for 5 weeks now but don't really seem to be getting any better. Have bad days and better days. Work has been pretty stressful and I think the worrying about the acid also creates a viscious cycle!! I also get a lot of burping which I think is almost the cause of the burning.

Hope it works out for you guys!!

Regards

Toby dog, in a word - YES. All of the time. The feeling is pretty constant, and it feels as though my throat is swollen/closing up and I'm trying to breathe through a straw.

Re: LPR - Throat Wheezing/Shortness of Breath

Hi Michelle,

I have a lot of issues with my voice. I was diagnosed with LPR three years ago. A year and a half ago, my husband lost his job, we lost our insurance and I have not been able to take anything but over-the-counter meds. Now, my problem seems to be getting worse. It is very frightening--especially the feelings you described of the swelling throat and shortness of breath.

Have you seen the Larynologist yet? I am curious as to what was said.

Re: LPR - Throat Wheezing/Shortness of Breath

Nsomniac,

I apologize that it has taken me so long to get back to you! I'm still dealing with the same symptoms. I did see the Larynologist, who did confirm that I do have LPR with some form of vocal chord dysfunction.

I also saw a Top ENT Specialist who told me that I had a lot of swelling around the top of my esophagus, and that my Acid reflux was still very much active. He said that sensation of my throat closing and difficulty breathing was coming from that swelling. I guess that would explain why most of the time those Asthma Inhalers they gave me don't work.

In the last time I posted here, I've also been diagnosed with severe Vit D deficiency. I'm going to ask about getting tested to Sjorgren's Syndrome as well because I have problems with chronic dryness of the eyes, mouth, sinuses, throat and skin. A friend of mine had all of the same symptoms that I do, and she was just diagnosed.

Michelle

Re: LPR - Throat Wheezing/Shortness of Breath

Thanks for your reply Michelle. I also had Vitamin D deficiency last year when tested by my endocronologist(I also have Grave's Disease), but I don't have the dry eyes and dry mouth as you are experiencing.

What treatments are you getting for your acid reflux? And what are the doctor's plans for future treatment?

I also tried asthma inhalers. It didn't take long to realize they weren't helping me either

Take care and thanks again for your reply.

My treatment plan for now consists of taking the Vit D, Kapidex(which I may soon change to something else due to side-effects), Voice therapy, dietary changes(low carb seems to help some).

Right now the Kapidex dosage is 30mg, which did help some, but even on that dosage the side effects are becoming too much. So I'm on the hunt for more options.

Michelle
