acid reflux - getting that stuck feeling

I've been diagnosed with acid reflux 2 months ago and in the last 5 weeks I'm unable to eat any solid food..it just gets stuck =/

so I went to my doc and told her that when I eat and even when I chew food to the smallest particles I still feel it gets stuck and for some time I jjust felt it got stuck, but now I feel like it's stucking on the right side right beside where guys have adam's apple...I told this to my doc and she sent me to barium swallow which I have next week, cause she said there could be diverticulum (a pocket in my throat where food stucks)

so I wanted to know if anyone had this same sensation with acid reflux? I'm afraid if they found next week it's diverticulum, cause I'm afraid I'll have to go on operation and I read in some cases it can be fatal too

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

oh and I forgot to mention I'm on prescription drugs Asentra as well, so it's even harder cause when I eat I can't get myself to not think on 'how food will go down and oh maybe it'll get stuck' is it possible I could feel that just 'in my head' that something is sticking there on the right side? but then again I feel like it's there and when I swallow continously to 'get it down' I have no luck with it...please share your experiences/thoughts..I'd really appreciate it.

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

I only have limited experience to share but wanted to pop in and encourage you to NOT imagine the worst; the worst almost never happens. Until you have the barium swallow (which sounds like a good next step), try to engage your mind in other things and not on your swallowing. I do think there's an anxiety factor with this. That's not to say you're imagining things, but dwelling on it doesn't do any good and may make the symptoms worse. Try reading a GREAT book or watch a GREAT movie while you nibble a snack and drink something. When I'm thinking about my swallowing, my swallowing seems more difficult. Then sometimes I'll be eating and my kids or something else will demand my attention and later I think, "Wow...I managed to eat and don't remember it..." Are you able to eat soft foods? Yogurt? Cottage cheese? Mashed potatoes? Are you "washing down" your food with liquids? I think it's quite normal for solid foods to sometimes feel like they need help going down. I often feel like I need to "wash down" my food when I eat, especially when my LPR is acting up and my throat and esophagus are sore. If it's any comfort, I had imagined several terrible scenarios regarding what might be in my throat and esophagus, and then I had both a laryngoscopy and an endoscopy this past month and they both showed nothing alarming (except the pesky reflux). So now I'm in the "ticked off" stage with this reflux crap and, aside from taking my medication and watching what I eat, I'm now doing my best to ignore it. You can't let it take over your life.

By the way, I am half Slovenian (although I live in the U.S.).

thank you very much for your reply. I also think there's anxiety factor with this, but you know it's hard to concentrate on other things while you have anxiety present as well, but I will try. 2weeks ago I felt really good and was thinking reflux is slowly going away, cause I was able to eat semi-solid food (cakes, potatoe, chicken meat, bread) without it 'sticking' so that's where my doubt about possibke diverticulum kinda changed, cause if you have that I guess food ALWAYS stays there, so if I was able to eat normally for a week...
however, I'm waiting for barium swallow now, cause as you said maybe they'll find nothing alarming and I'll feel better when I'll know there isn't anything there. I had similar problems 2 years ago..went to ER in the middle of the night, cause I was feeling I was unable to inhale any air and I stayed there for 3 days for tests and all and while I was there I just 'noticed' when I ate banana for breakfast that I couldn't swallow well and when they sent me home then and I got all the results I found out there was actually nothing serious other than anxiousness and my problem with swallowing kinda just vanished after a few days, so yeah anxiousness with reflux is a really bad thing.
also I was thinking about my swallowing problem and food sticking 'on the right side' maybe it really is sticking there, but maybe when I eat sometimes I overthink about it and probably don't swallow correctly and therefore food really sticks there.

as for eating soft foods, yes I'm able to eat cottage cheese, yoghurt and mashed potato too, but sometimes with potato I'll get a feeling like it doesn't go down even though it's mashed and I have to drink lots of water to flush it down. But most of the time I'll eat puddings and such things and here and there a slice of bread when I feel that my throat isn't sore, cause when it is I know it will not all go down the way it should.

thank you very much. It is comforting to know there might be all the difficulties with eating in my imagination and that I'm not alone in this. thank you for sharing your experience. I really appreciate it.

I'm glad you're getting better too. and yes you're right, you can't let it take over your life, cause for the same reason I lost 17 lbs in just a month and a half and it's really irritating, so I'll try my best to ignore it too as much as possible.

oh and that's really great you're half slovenian, didn't meet much people from here living in the US. and btw I love US hehe. If you want to chat on messenger sometime, PM me, I love to meet new people and learn about how's it living in different places etc specially when we share same nationality.

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

oh my goodness, i feel like you are me talking, i have lost 25 lbs since march and go through bouts where solida AND liquids are hard to keep down, by hard, i mean nearly impossible, they get stuck or just come back up...i am actually off to bed but have many old and recent posts. We'll have to be in touch, you are sooo not alone but i can see how you'd feel that way b/c i know i do.

ps. i also have suffered from anxiety issues for years and do feel that plays a key role but still when you can't get food down week after week, what gives? also, i am withdrawing from psychiatric meds for anxiety which the dr thinks could be triggering this in me, so whats his solution? to get back on them....ummmm....no hellish poisins (for me personally)....please help my body from being posined as its MY body and i'm sick of being sick from the meds. Note: i am mentally feeling the best i have in eons (sp?) despite dealing with some serious issues as this and gallbladder problems, etc. strange?

thank you for your reply. I'm glad I'm not alone in this, we'll indeed have to keep in touch.
so you have the same feeling food getting stuck on one side? cause with me it's always on the right side for awhile now

I know doctors just give you anxiety meds, cause I had the same think back in 2007 when my reflux started and my previous doc put me on ADs and didn't cure my acid which seemed to cure somehow itself until I got it back now and a lot worse one.

I think the most important thing in our case is not to give up. I'm trying to eat slowly this week and it seems to work a little tho I still get food stuck from time to time and it irritates me there in my throat for about 4-5 days then =/

Oh and for everyone replying to this thread:

fyi I had barium swallow 2 days ago and guess what, doc said there isn't anything 'strange' now how's that possible, why's then food getting stuck on one side? it can't be just a sensation cause I really feel it there when I swallow and I also feel I have much more dry mouth and less saliva when food is in there...I'm waiting for my test results which I should receive today, but if doc already told me he diodn't see anything strange I don't think the results will say anthing else..I have to go see my doctor in 2 days, cause I'm running out of Esomeprazol..I've been taking it for 4 weeks and it's not much change here..I only feel mentally I'm able to eat somehow better, because my anxiety meds are helping, so I have no idea what my doc will put me on now..what do you think should I ask her for more tests? cause I don't wanna just let it go if I know it's not alright despite barium swallow results supposedly saying it is.

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

Hi... I'm Tom in Ohio; just diagnosed with severe gastric reflux disease. We are not alone in this disease! I too suffer from many of the same symptons that you do. I am "diving" into holistic healing as fast as I can. I am on omeprazole..I take two 20mg tablets a day. I am eating smaller meals, chewing extremely longer and cutting out caffein, chocolate, alcohol and spicey foods. I am trying to mentally log my diet looking for more triggers. I am forcing myseld to exercise (it aids digestion) and of course no foods after 7:00 PM. I am going to a holistic specialist and will report what I find. I have surfed the net and will be trying some natural herbs. Our problem is the hiatal sphincter muscle not closing tightly! I too have experienced heart attach like symptons and which produce anxiety. It is a mental fight....BUT WE CAN DO IT.... we can! I hope we can keep in touch...this has made me so much more compassionate to those who suffer; I hope and pray good health on all of you!
Tom

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

Hi Tom! Thank you for sharing your experience as well. The more that there is similar to all of us the better, cause it makes bearing it a little easier when we know we're not alone. I was at the doctor today and she gave me another 4 packs of esomeprazol 40mg which I'm taking 1 pill before sleep. I also asked about gastroscopy and my barium swallow result which showed no diverticulums (she was suspecting one after I told her my food stays on particular place on the right side) and she said gastrocopy isn't necessary since I told her I can eat a little better now, but food is still getting stuck. she said if it gets worse I'll have to go, otherwise that's it. So I'm on esomeprazol for at least 2 more months and then I make an appointment again..she also sent me to fonbiator (sp?) ceause she's more concerned about my raspy voice which I have for as long as I remember... I told her about food sticking and if there's anything else to do and she said it could be all due to sore throat..I'll see if that's the case in a week or so, cause for now I still am getting food stuck on the right side.

Tom I also am cutting out caffein for about a year already, chocolate (tho sometimes like now for instance when my bday is coming up I tried chocolate cake),and spicey foods. I don't drink alcohol, so this one's a piece of cake for me. I try not to eat after 7pm too, cause I have to be fasting 2 hours before I take my pill and 1 hour after I take it I shouldn't eat either, so after that it's my bedtime and I don't anything after that.
Wow you're exersising too? geez I already lostabout 22lbs for not being able to eat any solid for 5 weeks and I had to stop exersising, cause that would only take me more lbs.

yes, please do report us on your results and good luck!

about natural herbs, I tried so far only apple cider vinegar+honey combo...someone here suggested clean apple jiuce too, so I'll probably go about trying this one if it doesn't get better with my meds.

You're right, it's a mental fight and I hate it, but together we're stronger!

I hope we keep in touch too and wish you and pray for all of us for good health too!

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

oh and I forgot to mention this, lately I'm having a really bad cold, but I don't think it's all from cold, cause I never had it like now. My nose gets so stuffed that when I eat I'll literraly feel pressure in my ears when swallowing, it's so irritating. anyone gets that as well?

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

I get a fair bit of pain from time to time in my left ear and also a LOT of sinus drainage. At the moment my throat is burning, burning, burning and nothing other than throat sweets with mild anesthetic. I have a hiatus hernia which is causing this and I really am starting to lose faith with it even though I have only really had it since Sept!

Wishing you all a healthy and wealthy 2010!

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

wishing you guys much better health in 2010 too Tonight whilst everyone was eating their wonderful christmas eve meals and i could barely get down fish...without major rflux..on 40 mg prilosec a day...i thought of how last christmas i could have never imagined this situation i'd be in and for how LONG! i used to take eating for granted but now i savor every taste and know that although i am in much discomfort much of the time, i am alive and we all are and we can and will do this. I am very thankful for you cyber people here sharing your details of this awful "thing" i call it b/c for me its so much more than just heartburn, heck, i don't even feel heartburn, throat burn, lol But really, you guys lift my spirit here and although i'm not healed, i hope we can all get there or close to comfortable again and by sharing our stories and support, you guys make me not feel so alone with this strange "illness" that i feel has been caused by many factors and has affected my life so dramatically. Happy holidays

ps. yes, i know exactly what you mean about the drainage (like post nasal drip?) and ear pressure....i also feel as though my left ear is burning and warm moreso than not as that side of my throat has been on fire for, oh, you know, weeks. I am really thinking of attempting the jump to nexium again and possibly carafate but i'm seriously considering my options and sitting on this for a bit as i'm learning the more meds i get on the worse it is sometimes, idk.

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

I'm in the same exact boat. I'm trying to figure out whats going on as well. I have always had heartburn and I take Prevacid 30mg 1 time a day. A few months ago I started having phlegm in my throat and constantly clearing my throat. I went and had my throat scoped and they found moderate esophagitis.
He switched me to Zegerid 1 time a day. I felt that I had fewer side effects but that it was making my anxiety medicine not work as well and I didn't want to increase my anxiety medicine so he put me back on Prevacid. Throat got worse over a few weeks after the switch, constant phlegm and felt wheezy. My doctor sent me to an allergy doctor. He gave me a nose spray and a asthma medicine. I tried the nose spray and it did help with some of the phlegm but made my sore throat worse. So I stopped it, I haven't tried the asthma medicine yet because I'm afraid to do anything that will make it worse. I have lost 40 pounds in 2 months and can barely eat because the food feels like it gets stuck on the right side of my throat and makes my anxiety go through the roof. So I have been drinking Boost Plus quite a bit and eating when I feel like I can. I'm only 26 and was fine 3 months ago. I'm trying to figure out whats going on, but no luck yet.

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

oh my goodness twigg!! you sound just like me, i am 28 and was fine 6 months ago...i have lost 25 lbs and eating is HELLISH. I wear large clothes so that people don't notice as much or worry as much, the skin in my mouth is eroded and i go through bouts where i live off of ensures.. i am literally becoming a shell of myself. You poor thing, i soooooo know your pain and live it every day. I am trying to ignore this beast but it isn't working, what the hell is going on with us and why can the dr's not figure it out? I am sure it is complicated but there are soooo many of us here suffering to no avail. i am sorry, i am not be productive but i feel mad and robbed tonight, i understand that years of stress could have led to this but i am giving this my all and its not getting anywhere near better, so i am mad and feel like venting i am mad at my stomach.

Anyways...we will all get through this, i have faith, lets keep sharing notes, my goodness we are so young to be going through this (no one should have to suffer like this but i'm shocked this is going on with me at 28).

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

Hi everybody... I wish you all good health and healing! I have recently had some success with the following. An endoscopy and they stretched my esophagus! I am feeling better!
1. I do eat smaller frequent meals..bland etc.
2. Cut out spices, alcohol, caffein etc.
3. Tried the red apple and apple cider vinegar... DID NOT WORK FOR ME!
4. Started raw organic honey 3 times a day when possible...it helps me!!
I put a teaspoon in the microwave and melt it down so it will absorb.
I take it with bread and tepid water.
5. I started taking 2 oz of aloe vera juice.. (from leafs and organic)... suppose to help heal my ulcerated esophagus.
6. Sleeping on the dreaded wedge pillow ... it helps but uncomfortable.
7. I do not eat after 7:00 PM
8. Not eating anything that might scratch my esophagus and I actually put my fork down and chew my food as much as I can. Learning to really taste things. My Dr has me on omeprazole.. two 20 mg per day...yuck ..but I am grateful that it does cut the acids. My Sphrincter muscle will not close all the way causing the acids to role up and burn my esophagus...oh well..I am feeling better. The drugs cause me anxiety and I am really hope to some day conquer them. I have researched certain types of licorice and something called serrapatesse..(spelling?/) I went to a holistic expert and he told me to check with my Dr. about mixing. The problem is our Dr's are clueless to these herbs and plants and the hoilistic experts do not like the drugs. Our little problem to solve.
Sincerely...may you be blessed with rest and health!
Tom

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

I have been dealing with throat tightness for about 3 months now. After my last endoscope they stretched my throat and I can't tell you how much it helped. If you have a feeling of someone strangling you have it done!!!

However, I get this incredible burning in my throat (like I swallowed a mega hot chilli pepper) behind my adams apple. It last for about 6 hours and the only thing that helps is sipping on coke. This burn affects my chest also, causing a feeling of pain.

I am glad to see other suffer, but it sucks. They recently said I have some pre cancerous bacteria growing in my stomach and I will have this treated some ploracopter or something. I will let you know how that goes.
