Question Acid Reflux without the acid

Acid Reflux jolts me out of a dead sleep. It's very abrupt and my heart pounds from the startle! I now watch what I eat-when I eat it and take meds.

One night I ate a bit late so I took meds before bed. I got woken up from a dead sleep anyway but this time there was no acid or icky tasting stuff. My heart was pounding again from the distress I feel when I think I'm going to taste that stuff. Why did I still get jolted awake if there was no acid?

Re: Acid Reflux without the acid

In addition to acid reflux, there is also something known as non-acid reflux. I don't know too much about it, but I found online:

Non-acid reflux is when other potentially harmful agents (not stomach acid) are refluxed into the oesophagus such as bile. It has been discovered that non-acid reflux is defined as a reflux that has a greater pH level than 4.

I believe my condition involves mainly non-acid reflux as I rarely have heartburn or the acid taste in my mouth. I just have signficant coughing after eating.

i have non-acid reflux and feel an acid taste in my mouth, ppi's dont work for me, i still have to confirm if in addition to the bile reflux im also refluxing hydrochloric aci, i have no heartburn either, nothing was found on my stomach or esophagus except for too much bile.

PS: i've never had my gallbladder removed, mostly people who have tend to get bile reflux (non acid reflux, duodenogastric reflux)
