Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

I've been on PPIs (10mg) every other day for the last 6 years. It worked beautifully. I'm trying to come off them now but have a question about dosage and acid reduction.

I'm presuming that different doses result in a varying degree of acid reduction. When I was taking 10mg every other day I'm guessing my acid production didn't shut off completely or as much as it would've done with higher doses?

Re: Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

For the most part, yes, but some people may be more sensitive to it than others. I suggest you buy an H2 blocker (Zantac, ranitdine) and start taking it at least once a day when you quit. It may be that you have no rebound symptoms, about half of people who quit feel fine. Other people have rebound symptoms for a month or two, occasionally even longer (unlikely in your case). Also have some Gaviscon around for quick relief. When rebound fades, you can decrease the doses of Zantac or Gaviscon.

Re: Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

Thanks Jane. I've got some Gaviscon - really surprised that two spoons at night actually seem to last well into the next day. Useful tool during this wind down phase.

I must admit to having a day or two recently where I've contemplated going back on the tablets, but I think I really need to give myself about 2 months at least before reconsidering.

Re: Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

Hi, I also have found Gaviscon Very good. I was prescribed PPIs but have never taken them. Gaviscon will get me through the night OK. Another thing you might find helpful is Aloe Vera Juice, I take it regular and have heard its good for the Digestion.
Good Luck, Solofelix.

Re: Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

Thanks Solofelix, I tried once before a few years back but forgot about aloe juice. I've just received some Honeygar (organic raw apple cider vinegar with honey) which a lot of people claim to be excellent.

Re: Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

Hi, Ive read that A.C.V is good for reflux. I have never tried it.
Has anyone else tried it and found it helpful.
What else is it good for! Would like to know.
Thanks, Solofelix.

Re: Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

I'll let you know in a few weeks! The stuff I've bought apparently used by Ranulph Fiennes amongst others for arthritis. Its also purported to be good for reflux and digestion and general well being.

I learnt that you need organic raw ACV rather than the clear stuff from the supermarket. It actually takes lovely - still somewhat vinegary but much like a nice cloudy cider makes it easier. I'm going to have two tablespoons each evening before dinner and see how it goes.

Re: Question about PPI Dosage and acid reduction

oellph, thanks for the reply. I will read up on it. I have Arthritis as well as stomach issues. Not sure if it would work with Candida which I get in my mouth at times, but would like to try it for other reasons. Solofelix.
