Just wanting to be heard...

I've had acid reflux for about 5 or 6 years now, but was just diagnosed last year. I'd say about 50% of food gives me extreme acid reflux. My doctor has not helped me one bit. All he did was to "eat healthier". Yeah if it was that easy I would have done that already. Lots of "healthy" foods give me terrible acid reflux too. Even water provokes acid reflux. I have no idea why. My doctor says its impossible for water to give me acid reflux. Well it happens almost on a daily basis. Some things I can't eat/drink because it gives me acid reflux...
-Pizza
-soda
-fried food
-water
-orange juice
-apple juice
-bananas
-pasta
-tomato sauce
-anything spicy
-anything w/ alcohol
-coffee
-chocolate

Yeah I realize most of those things are unhealthy, but I could be fine the entire day and then drink a glass of water and get extreme acid reflux. I don't know how it feels for anyone else but its comparable to having fire shoot up from my stomach through my throat, or sometimes feels like a razer cutting the back of my throat. There are only a few things that I know will definitely not cause acid reflux: milk, ice cream, bread, and any kind of mint.

Before I was able to visit the doctor I was taking OTC Prilosec for about 6 months and it worked like a charm and could eat anything I wanted. But I told my doctor I was taking it and he told me it would make everything worse and that I just have to eat healthier. But I have been trying very hard not to eat late (past 9 pm) and not to eat fatty or fried foods, but it doesn't matter when I eat, how much I eat, or what I eat, and whether or not I had acid reflux at all throughout the day, every single night without fail, I wake up in the middle of the night with extreme acid reflux. I keep a giant container of extra strength Tums (must be mint flavor or else it doesn't work). And it keeps it away for several hours only to wake up to it a few hours later. I'm sick of constantly popping Tums in my mouth and sick of being able to eat just about anything... can someone give me any tips on how to reduce acid reflux symptoms? And please don't jsut say "eat healthier". Thanks in advance for any advice you may have given.

Re: Just wanting to be heard...

Ive had the same for three years. Like myself you now know what you can/cannot eat and drink. From all I have read on here there does not seem to be a cure. What were you prescribed after your Endoscopy.I was given Nexium but found it no help and further more they are addictive, so left them of very quickly. The worse thing for me at the moment is this feeling of a Golfball in the throat and so sore, (back to baby food again)...
Have you tried GAVISCON its about the only thing that will help me for awhile.
All the best, Solofelix.

Re: Just wanting to be heard...

Well, if you were taking Prilosec for 6 months, there's a "rebound" period after stopping the drug. It lasts up to 2 months, and during it symptoms are worse than they were before you took it.

Believe it or not, a lot of us have issues with swallowing water. Not the symptoms I'd get if, say, I ate pasta with marinara, but some.

Hang in there! Have you tried propping up the head of your bed, so you sleep slightly upright? Or taking a Zantac before bed?

Re: Just wanting to be heard...

Re the lump in throat/bulbous throat - I found slippery elm really helpful in getting rid of this, and I've mentioned it to others in the past who have also found it helpful. It just takes away the soreness and the lump in throat decreases very noticeably.

Really hope things improve for you all really soon. I have since been diagnosed as celiac, and avoiding gluten, dairy and fruits/onions makes a big difference, also caffeine - but seems you are probably avoiding that already.
Best wishes

Re: Just wanting to be heard...

Seriously, find yourself a new doctor.

I started out, years ago, on Protonix then Nexium and now Prilosec. They work like a dream and no, have definitely NOT made things worse.

As for water. Too much liquid sets mine off too. Especially when I add ice. I no longer use ice in anything I drink. Orange juice absolutely kills me so that is no longer even in the house. I hated giving it up but it's just not worth the pain.

It took me a year or so to really figure out exactly what I could eat and drink, and what I couldn't. Sometimes time of day matters. I can't eat eggs in the morning, but I can eat them in the evening for supper.

I kept a spread sheet of what I ate, time of day, and what type of reaction (if any) I had to it. I now have everything balanced really well so my diet, combined with one Prilosec every day, keeps me comfortable.

Get yourself a new doctor, a referral to a dietician, and I hope you feel better soon!

Re: Just wanting to be heard...

I've been taking Omeprazole for about two years, and it does help, but you're right, that list of foods in your post cause most of us who have acid reflux a lot of misery. Sometimes I can get away with a couple slices of pizza, but mostly if I eat the wrong foods, I pay the price with a spell of nausea and diarrhea. I got a list of foods that don't trigger heartburn--or supposedly don't--and I've been doing better since eating chicken, rice, and other items on the list.

Re: Just wanting to be heard...

electrospector, please keep in mind that everytime you have an episode, you increase your risk for Barrett's and ultimately, esophogeal cancer. It is imperative that you get scoped and then get on the appropriate medication and diet. As I said before, you really need to find a new doctor, and I would suggest a specialist as opposed to a PCP.

As the others have said, your list of foods will set off just about anyone with reflux. What you need now is to learn to avoid the worst offenders, cut way back on the others, and get treatment. Good luck!

Re: Just wanting to be heard...

HI Shewolf75! I am right there with ya. It is so frustrating. I just broke down and cried this morning. I am so tired of having flareups. I am trying to control the reflux and year round allergies at the same time. It is so hard. I go on and off Prevacid. I am guilty of not eating the best but rapidly changing that. I blame being in my 40's and going through the change too. My hormones are up and down and I honestly believe that digestion problems occur during this time. I hate the lump in throat thing, breathing issues, mucus and anxiety. I am so sick of it all. I know I need to change my diet and it doesn't happen overnight. I am working hard at doing that and I have been hitting the gym every day to take off those few extra pounds. I am hoping that somehow by doing all this I can cure this if not reduce the bad feelings and hope I don't have much damage.

Good luck to you. The probiotics and aloe vera juice are great things to be doing as well as proper diet. Keep me posted.
