Question about acid reflux and palpitations

Hi I'm new to the board. For months I woke up with acid burning my throat. I ignored it as indegestion. I started getting really bad palpitations. I went to Primary care doctor. He put me on Nexium and told me it was acid reflux. I didn't agree so I ddn't take the pill. The palpitations got so bad, I went to the my cardiologist (I have MVP and a heart murmur). He did an echo. I went home and it got bad again, I ended up in the ER. All test there came back negative. I had a stress echo at the hospital yesterday. My cardiologist was there and told me it was all fine.
I noticed that when I eat, the palpitations start and I feel them in my throat. When I don't eat I'm fine. Now I'm just eating apple sauce and crackers. I have an appt. for an ENT. My doctor wants me to do a endoscopy.
My question is, have any of you had those palpitations due to acid reflux? Is the endoscopy uncomfortable or do they numb you up?
I get so nervous when I get the palpitaions. Eventhough the cardiologist says I have no heart problems I think I'm going to die when they start. I get at least 10 through the day. Any advice you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated. Oh, yes the doctor put me on Xanax to calm me and I'm also going through menopause.

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

Well, if it's happening after eating, that's a sign it could be digestive! When acid comes up, it can irritate the vagus nerve, which can cause all kinds of wacky symptoms.

You've had a cardiac workup. Why don't you try the pills and see if they help at all?

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

Well I thought I was the only one with this problem. I was diagnosed last summer, had sore throat lasted long time they said acid reflux. Like you I didn't have heartburn so I figured that can be riight. Well I have had a complete cardio workup like you because my irregular heartbeats.. like you they started after a meal and felt like they were in the throat. Now for the past few months they feel like they are in the chest... My cardio was fine... couldn't find anything... now a year later after an endoscopy I found out I have stomach ulcers.. on nexium 2x a day.. still feel no different..

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

Yes, I too have burning in my throat and palpitations at the same time. Sometimes I get attacks of extreme burning up in my esophagus and palpitations together that lasts a couple of minutes and goes away. (Spasms) although I can feel a mild burning in my throat at most times. Lately I have real bad acid reflux and have a chronic sore throat. My doctor prescribed 30 mg of prevacid to take once daily and instead I take it at night because when I would lie down I would get a mouthful of acid, it seems to help for the night but I sometimes get my symptoms back in the day and it's not time to take my pill yet. I think I will ask my doctor if I can take more prevacid or something. I also have been taking Tums.
I think what happened to me was all this medication is causing a rebound but it's kind of hard to get off of it.

Post Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

I had my appt with my gastro today for the results of my endoscopy...no cancer or precancer... no bacteria just ulcers in the stomach..so trying something other than nexium... I did ask about palipatations and he said they were not associated with acid reflux... now I am really confused.

Just because your doctor said they aren't related doesn't mean they aren't happening.

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

i have the same issue. it is the vagus nerve becoming irritated after eating. the vagus lays right along the esophagus inside the body and that is what causes it. It truly is a terrible disease and you have to be so careful what you eat. See a gastroenterologist and have him or nher advise you. Good luck

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

I have had problems with my heartbeat and mild AF for 2 years now. I'm sure its to do with indigestion as i have also had acid reflux really bad through that time too,

I had an endoscope yesterday and I have a sliding hiatus hernia, which really adds up to why ive been feeling so bad with palps and heartburn for all this time.

Was odd as i had a cT scan on my lungs 2 weeks ago and a respiratory doctor says i DONT have a hiatus !! but my gastro says i do. Maybe if it was a sliding one it had slipped back in at time of CT scan.

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

I have serious reflux and get by very well with Rantidine (aka zantac, a histamine H2-receptor antagonist). I can buy a big bottle over the counter (150 mg) at Walmart for a couple dollars (cheaper than my copay for prescribed meds). I've tried Omeprazole (prevacid, a proton pump inhibitor) and it works, but it doesn't work near as well.

The acid can damage your esophagus so it needs treated. Until you can make it to the dr or be treated, I'd try different ones til you find one that will work. (But do see your dr and have it dx/treated, don't keep treating it yourself.)

HAS ANYONE -or yourself- heard of, or been treated for, B12 DEFICIENCY?

I seem to have big issues with this as well. I do KNOW B12 deficiency symptoms include PALPATATIONS. It includes many other things as well, particurally being tired, drained.

I read somewhere (more than once) that antacids can contribute to the bodies inability to absord B12. I'm not sure if reflux pills are considered
'antacids' but it makes me wonder. I think it would be worth asking a dr to screen your blood (simple) for B12 deficiency if you've been taking antacids and are having the palpatations, feeling drained, foggy, etc.. (Just a thought.)

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

I think after a long time i have finally put the jigsaw together re: my heart palps and near fainting and now my newly diagnosed hiatus hernia.

Ive had these nr faint episodes for a long time and i have also experienced through all of this, heart burn, indigestion, and reflux. I honestly think that my hiatus hernia is pressing on or near my vagus nerve and thats exactly whats causing my palps and nr fainting. My Cardio doctor has done lots of tests on my heart and found nothing inconclusive. Which i think explains why i still have these palps. It HAS to be the pressing or the irritation of that nerve.

Anyone else who has these symptoms can tie this up with a hernia?

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

I have always compared this hard lump which docs say is base of my sternum with hubbys. Mine protrudes much more than his and I'm way smaller. But doc says it's my bone, I'm not so sure if that's not part of the hernia, then no I can't feel mine anywhere else.

The hernia itself doesn't hurt but the side effects it causes does in that I get all different types of stomach pain, cramps, sharp pains, nausea , wind pains. Not all at once !!

My hernia is a sliding one and it's quite small so nothing I can do but take nexium and gaviscon. Hope that helps.

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

Oh and my main symptom was awful heartburn and shortness of breath. But what made me push for the endo was that the acid reflux got so bad it gave me a horrendous cough I couldn't shift for 3 months. The acid actually leaked onto my lungs and totally irritated them. That was awful.

Re: Question about acid reflux and palpitations

My problems started when I put on weight in my belly area. I've had Acid Reflux before but it's gotten worse since I put on weight. Seems almost all weight went to the belly area. I'm going to try to lose some of my belly and see if that helps the Reflux, back splash, boating, gas etc. I just read that moderate exercise and the right kind can help manage hernia.
