Hello, I was hoping someone could give me some advice on whether I should continue to take ranitidine when switching to prevacid. I am worried that reflux will worsen if i don't since prevacid can take a few days or a week to take effect. Has anyone been taking these two at the same time?
Why are you switching from one to the other. Is it because it isn't working or it doesn't agree with you.
I was told I could take Gaviscon along with my PPI.
As it is I don't take any PPIs now I just take Gaviscon, so you could take that until the new PPI kicks in. I take it three times a day when bad.
Hope this helps, Solofelix.
I am switching because there was slight improvements with the ranitidine, but still having issues. I don't think I have ever heard of Gaviscon? I think if things get worse before the PPI kicks in, I will take the ranitidine. Thanks for responding.
I believe Gaviscon is available in the USA as I have read of people who have used it from there. It is a REFLUX SUPPRESSANT in liquid or tablet form. My Consultant told me to take it along with PPIs and that it lines the stomach. My whole family take it and find it excellent. You can buy it in the Chemist/Supermarket or Online.
Perhaps you could halve the dose of one PPI until the other kicks in. Solofelix.
Have you discussed this with your doctor? Stick with something which relieves your symptoms. On important thing to remember though, is that all medicines have side effects which are magnified with long term use, so read the directions carefully. I was on a PPI (Prevacid is a PPI) for 3 years. It relieved my symptoms but caused my bones to lose calcium, so now I have Osteopenia (early stage Osteoporosis). I switched to Zantac (aka Ranitidine which is a H2-Receptor Blocker) in November 2010. It worked great until recently. Now I am having nausea which is a side effect.
