Anyone run courses of PPIs?

What I mean is has anyone gone on PPI's for a said period of time (weeks, months), then take a break from them, then go back?

Just wondering because, unfortunately after 1 yr of being free from them, I'm having a rough time and thinking about going back for a short period. Problem is, after that short period I'm not sure how I'll do coming back off them.

I am so frustrated I could cry. My husband doesn't want me to give up trying to figure this out. I've just been sooo stressed for over a year and want to feel normal again. That, in itself doesn't help.

Diet: as close to vegetarian as I can get. Exercise: yes. Weight: normal. EGD May of last year: completely normal. Don't drink, don't smoke. What am I doing wrong!!!!

Re: Anyone run courses of PPIs?

I personally cannot do that. 2-3 days, yes, I can do that and stop no problem. 2 weeks, I get hooked. I know some people can manage a short course, though.

Re: Anyone run courses of PPIs?

Like you I don't Drink/Smoke and eat healthy and have the same as you.
I was prescribed Nexium but only took it for one week.
I told my Specialist I didn't want to go down that route if I could help it. He said it was O.K to take a short course as and when I needed.
If you are going to take PPIs for some months then I would suggest tapering them off gradually. Like 1 instead of 2 per day, then 1 every other day and so on.
Hope this helps, Solofelix.

Re: Anyone run courses of PPIs?

Last year I had an endoscope which showed 2 gastric ulcers and the "beginning" of a 3rd one, inflammation, an esophageal polyp and was dx'd with AR and GERD. Doctor put me on Zegerid 40 mg once daily for 4 months.

Then I had my second scope which showed my gastric ulcers were healed but still had a slight area of inflammation in the esophagus. My GI doc said I could continue on Zegerid or take Pepcid Complete (40 mg AM, 20 PM). I chose to take the Pepcid Complete after tapering off the PPI.

For almost a year, I was pain free and able to eat my normal diet, (plant based/grains/small amount of chicken and fish and no fats or red meat). I was doing great for almost a year when AR/GERD reared its ugly head again. My GI doc told me to take Zegerid again but this time it didn't work so he prescribed Prevacid 30 mg once daily, Pepcid Complete 40 mg in AM, 20 in PM, and 1 ounce Gaviscon 4xday. I've been on this regiment since July 25th. I'm finally feeling a bit better.

I don't know if anyone has ever been able to stay off a PPI once on it. I frankly don't think I'll ever be able to stay off of it. And unfortunately there isn't any area, (diet, weight, etc.) that I can improve on. My only vice is an occasional cup of decaf coffee which I know is very bad!

I didn't have any problem getting off the Zegerid, maybe because of the Pepcid Complete. I was only too glad to get back on it when my AR/GERD flared up again!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Blessings,
Annie
I also have a hiatal hernia.
