I am 30 years old and been suffering with a number of symptoms since Jan 2010. Initially it was just a mild 'lump' in the throat with no hoarseness, but this has worsened over the last few months. I have had prolonged periods on 20, then 40mg a day of lansoprazole/omeprazole with little improvement. I have had a number of endoscopy exams that showed redness and inflammation around the vocal chords. I have never really experienced any heartburn but do feel bloated after meals. I recently had a ph monitor exam which showed normal levels of ph in the throat. My voice feels very coarse and there is a burning sensation after speaking, leaving my throat raw and 'scorched'. There is also a feeling of tightness in there that and I am finding myself clearing my throat (without success) very frequently. I had a GI exam a few weeks ago which showed no damage to the oesophagus but there was a lot of bile in my duodenum. I am negative for H pylori. I am considering have a barium swallow to see if there are any swallowing issues and have raised my bed head by 4 inches. I have started drinking aloe Vera juice, ginger tea but am seeing no real sign of improvement. I sing regularly but this has really effected my voice clarity and strength. Does all this sound familiar to anyone?? Any advice would be appreciated as it is causing me great stress and anxiety. Has anyone tried sucralfate? Is a barium swallow useful for this sort of condition? Could this be non-acidic reflux?
First of all, I feel your pain. Similar things here. Feels liek pills get stuck on right side of throat and often hard things like chips and cookies (which shouldnt be eating any way) feelslike it sticks there sometimes. Has really made me paranoid and nervous. SO my ENT doc says my lingual tonsil is swollen and it islikely reflux. Had the pH and manometry which showed normal motor function and 3 times normal reflux (mildy acidic to acidic). PPIs dexilant/lansoprazole not much help. Been 2 months and perhaps 15-20 % better. Here is what I have fojnd out;
THe larynx and throat tissues are not made to handle reflux of any kind acidic or not nor bile either so any damage may take half a year to heal proper.
Bile acid reflux may respond to gaviscon advance 1 hour after each meal. There are also some bile acid sequestrants and other pills as such that may help reduce ile acid.
This stuff is miserable at times. Keep working on your diet and liefstyle modifiactions. I am going for a scope one of these days . Just keep working on it. A swallowing study may help find out soemthings about the muscles in your larynx so I'd say why not. BEst of luck!
Cheers dude, I've actually been trying gaviscon adv after meals and will keep taking it, it's so expensive though! Thanks for the advice and good to know I'm not alone with these symptoms
