Sick for over a month - maybe reflux related? Need help!
I have been sick since the end of november constantly. Just as one thing has finished the next comes rolling in. I am completely loosing my mind here... And the doctors I am seeing are no help at all.
But I am starting to think maybe acid reflux has something to do with it? At least at the moment I have a killer heartburn, and I need some help to cope with it.
The story:
In late november I get a urinary tract infection, that my doctor have a hard time finding. But finally I get antibiotics; Mecillinam Pivmecillinam.
The urinary symptoms subsides, but my stuomach keeps hurting really bad. It just somehow moves upwards. And I get heartburn, feelings of hunger etc. And one night the stomach pain gets really bad and an emergency doctor (one of the few bright ones I have seen the last month) gives me a high dose of pantoprazol and takes me off the antibiotics, which by then has worked on the urine. Supposedly.
My stomach gets better on the pantoprazol. My family doctor takes a helicopactor test which is negative.
Just before getting completely better I catch a cold of some sort. Bad throat, cough etc. I think I stop the pantoprazol sometime around there? Don't remember...
At the same time my urinary tract infection comes back. This time I get sulfa and it goes away. My stomach is happier with the sulfa than the picmecillanam.
On christmas eve I have a fever and my sinuses hurt really bad. So I get a prescription for antibiotics against sinuitis. Don't remember which one.
It gets better and I am actually quite good for three whole blissfull days.
Untill new years eve, my last day on antibiotics and at nighttime I catch a very instant cold. Very strange...
The next day the sinuitis is back and I get Amoxicillin this time.
So now I am still on Amoxicillin and my stomach has gone completely mental.
During the whole time I have had stomach problems, but I always have that, so I hardly don't notice that anymore. I have cronic constipation and it's usually awfull, but the last month has been completely mental.
Antibiotics make me constipated (how can that happen?) and I have a horrible heartburn.
My throat is sore, but I am starting to think that it is related to acid, because the best relieve is from chewing acid neutralizing tablets and NOT usual cold meds.
My cold is also behaving strange. It's sort of running backwards down my throat.
And I have the fowlest taste in my mouth.
I read around here that stomach acid can get into the upper throat and airways? Could that be what is happening here?
I tried some days ago to eat Vitamin C supplements with Ascorbic acid in an attempt to do something about that cold. Auch, that was a bad idea!
I have started the pantoprazol again on my own. My problem right now is that I have a really hard time finding a doctor who can help me. They seem to look at me and say "oh you have a cold, go home and get better". And when I say I have a bad heartburn they say "oooh you just stick to the pantoprazol, that's all we have".
So untill I somehow magically find a doctor who will do something for me, what can I survive on OTC drugs and diet modifications? My throat and chest pain is killing me right now...
And what dose of propanazol is good?
Also is it true that my stomach acid problems could be a part of the cause of my sinus problems?
Re: Sick for over a month - maybe reflux related? Need help!
I think the antibiotics are causing your stomach problems which are causing your sinus problems and sore throat.
Don't take any more antibiotics if you can possibly avoid it. If the doctor prescribes them, say "Antibiotics hurt my stomach a lot, are they really necessary right now?"
Take the pantoprazole if it helps. Also, eat a bland diet with plenty of cooked vegetables. Drink water. Eat small meals, don't eat before bedtime.
And wash your hands frequently to avoid another cold.

Stick with the pantoprazole. Google Gerd Diet and you will find what you can eat. The main thing you want to stay away from food that contain tomato's, fried foods, high fat content foods, caffine and carbonate drinks. The Gerd diet will you a bit.
