Question 19 years old with chest pains. Could it be acid reflux? PLEASE HELP!

I've had off and on chest pains since the age of 15, I am now 19. When I first got the chest pains, they occurred a couple of times but went away for a year. As each year went by, the chest pains became more frequent and occurred more often. This past year has been the worst. I would describe the chest pain as sharp and inconsistent. Pain typically lasts in 30 second intervals, will go away for a few seconds/minutes, then come back. The pain typically starts off in my back (middle of the back and near shoulder blades) and migrates to both sides of my jaw, my chest, my ribs, and my arms. Sometimes the pain is absent in my chest, and is just in my arms, back, and jaw alone. I've have had ECG, EKG, Heart monitor, and a chest x-ray and everything has came back normal...so they deemed my chest pain to be non cardiac. They haven't referred me to any other specialists and am waiting to hear what my primary doctor will do next. I DO NOT HAVE ANXIETY. I've never had a problem with depression, panic attacks, or anxiety issues. I am constantly experiencing some kind of pain or discomfort, even if its dull. The past 6 months have been the worse. I do have Graves Disease and Hashimoto Disease...I am currently in remission from this and have been for two months. My levels are stable and normal. They've ruled that those two conditions aren't causing chest pain.

Could these chest pains be caused by the Esophagus, like an Esophagus spasm or Acid Reflux? I've read that non-cardiac chest pain is usually caused by that. I don't experience heartburn. I sometimes burp up food, but not sure if that is caused by gas.

Please, any insight would be nice.

I had a hip replacement op in January 2012, and within two days started to suffer from burping and then severe back pain and chest pain when I lay down. I was given all the checks that you had and nothing wrong was found. A consultant suggested that I may have Reflux and prescribed a suitable drug. This had no effect and the only way I could get rid of the symtoms was to sit up and sleep sitting up. After 10 days I researched on the net, and decided to following guidance on a change in diet. Within a few days I felt better, but it took two weeks before I could sleep on my back (This was a requirement for the hip recovery). After 6 weeks all my problems are over. I have a more items back to my diet, but have steered clear of those foodstuffs that are most problematic. If you take an unbiased review a your eating habits, you may come up with an answer. I am a fish eating, no meat vegetarian if the is not to confusing. I will be happy to forward links for you if this will help. Good luck!

So do you think your hip replacement was the cause of your chest pain or back pain - like a pinched nerve? And your doctor never referred you to get an endoscopy?

And far as my diet: It isn't the worst and it isn't the best, but I also live on a college campus so I have no choice but to eat the food they serve me. I also don't think diet is an issue, because these chest pains aren't triggered by anything it seems. I've tried to find reasons why I get them, but they're so random. They've happened since I was 15 years old, and I've always ate the same kind of foods my whole life. I've thought about it being food allergies, but the pains still happen regardless of what I eat...so there's no connections to any kinds of food causing it. Sometimes, the pains happen when I don't have food in my stomach. I'm just so lost. I'm so tired of the pain.

The chest pain I suffered from was not directly related to the Hip op. The doctor did not arrange an endoscopy but was convinced that I had Reflux. They did check for blood clots, heart problems, lung damage etc. I had x-ray, CC scan, ECG, urine and blood tests. I can tell you that the pain was frightening because of the intensity and the location. But I did not get pain in my jaw or arms. When I had meals, the pain did not come then, it would affect me later.
On the diet front: It is surprising how quickly the body responds to diet correction. If you do some research on diet associated with Reflux, give it a try for a couple of weeks. Acid producing foods must be cut down. Regular eating, maybe 5 times a days, but smaller meals (almost snacks) to give your system a rest. Fatty foods, fried foods should be cut out. I was surprised that tomatoes had to go completely. ( I have added them back but at a low level). You may have to go to a wholefood store and get some different food for the trial period, but if it works you are going to be so pleased for making the effort. I ate museli, with apple juice, yogurt and banana as a main meal. I wish you good health soon!

I'm 19 so if you're asking if it's possible to have reflux at this age then the answer is definitely yes. In regards to the pain, I get pain in my chest often along with other more bothersome symptoms. The pain you get sounds more severe than the pains I get but everyone suffers in different ways even if it's the same cause.

You do not need to pay a doctor to make changes to your diet. Reflux can be resolved by changing what you eat. If you have a physical problem with the valve at the top of your stomach you would be having tramatic symptoms. Always look at what your eating, but be prepared to face the doubters. The problem is too much acid. Do the research and get started. The great thing about diet adjustment is that you can easily alter it. It worked for me. Good luck!

I know it's possible to have Acid Reflux at my age, I was just wondering if my chest pain was being caused by Acid Reflux. My symptoms don't match up very well to it, but non-cardiac chest pain is usually caused by Esophagus problems and since my chest pain is non-cardiac, I'm assuming that's what it could be? I am not certain though, as I have been not diagnosed with anything yet.

I'm also curious: Could muscle pains be causing all of this?

If you have heartburn, that's usually a good indicator you have GERD. Try taking anti-acids and see if that helps. I don't get heart-burn, but have tried taking anti-acids for my chest pains and it doesn't work. That's why It's hard for me to believe I have Acid Reflux...but at the same time, what else could my chest pain be? It's not cardiac chest pains, so it's not anything related to the heart that is causing it.

Also, since you're 19, you can be on your parents insurance until your 26. And if you're in college, they offer student insurance I believe.

I too had a bad case of acid reflux. My doctor prescribed Losec. I can now eat whatever I wish with absolutely NO repercussions.

I don't *know* if it's Acid Reflux...I'm just thinking it *could be* because my chest pain has been determined as non-cardiac after a series of tests on my heart. I'm just looking for insight if anyone has similar symptoms as me, or if anyone thinks it could be Acid Reflux...

My chest pains happen on an empty stomach, too.
