lower rib cage pain?

I was on prilosec 3 weeks ago because ENT specialist saw some acid in my throat. after taking it for 4 days I started getting heart burns.
3 days later my heartburn was getting worse, so I went to the ENT specialist to ask him about my heartburn.. he told me to stop taking prilosec and that I should go to a doctor if my heartburn worsens.

2 weeks later my heartburn was almost gone 98% (I stopped taking prilosec), but I started getting a pain sensation on my lower rib cage on the sides, next to the sternum.
it almost feels like it pops when I take a deep breath.
the pain in the left went away about 5 days ago, but I feel a sharp pain on the right (only when I touch it) or when I work for 4 hours+ (but the pain doesn't last longer than 5 minutes)

It hurts to apply pressure to that spot. Is this a normal part of the stomach inflammation? Or should I be seriously concerned about this?
do I just ignore it?

THanks, any help will be appreciated

Re: lower rib cage pain?

Sometimes stomach inflammation causes pain near the bottom of the rib cage. And your pain doesn't sounds extreme.

Give it time, avoid foods that tend to disagree with you, etc. If it gets worse, get it checked out.

Re: lower rib cage pain?

Thank you so much!
yes, the pain is not severe, I'm 18 years old.
I only feel it when I push that part of my rib cage with my fingers.
I was worried.
Thanks again!

Re: lower rib cage pain?

Hi,
Acid Reflux can and will cause stomach inflamation.
This in turn can cause different painful sensations in various parts of your stomach.
I have suffered pains from AR under my ribs, on both sides of my stomach and in the centre
of my stomach.
Your symptoms sound quite normal and will fade eventually.
Good Luck,

Solofelix.

With me it comes and goes. Can feel great for days/weeks and then "Hey",
here we go again.
PPIs did not do a lot for me, I give them a go when the going gets tough but generally I get really strict about my diet and take PPIs for a short time along with Gaviscon and things usually turn OK until the next time.
Everyone is different but this seems to work OK for me.
Wishing all sufferers well.

Solofelix.

Re: lower rib cage pain?

Hi,
I take Nexium as and when needed. The longest time was 4 wks at 40 mg X 2 wks then 20 mg x 2 wks.
Diet wise I avoid all acidic fruits and spicy foods. I try to eat as little sugar containing foods as possible. I avoid all Alchohol as I have had stomach ulcers and wine in particular is really bad for me.
I dont touch coffee ( dont like it ) I drink only three cups of tea per day and the rest is herbal tea or water. I eat no food three hours before bedtime. I love chocolate but it has a bad effect on my AR but still have the odd bar some days ( cant give up everything ). Thats about it!!..
Yes I do suffer from Gas and Bloating but that could be related to my IBS (diagnosed).

Solofelix.

Hi again
I am so new to all of this that i dont have a clue as to how to fix this so to speak,,, is nexium like prevacid,,can i take prevacid only when needed,,,i do avoid most fruits except bananas and apples..i dont drink coffee either, i do drink chamomille tea in am with honey, i havent had a drink since mothers funeral 2 months ago,,i try very hard to not eat before bed i dont eat chocolate anymore(boohoo),,as for being diagnosed with anything the doctor just asked me what my symptoms were and said i had gastritis...do you know anything about that or how it should be diagnosed? IBS i have heard of but dont know much about the symptoms...i do have gurgling intestines quite often and gas and bloating,,,,
As for the acid problem..it seems to be ok for a few days or even a week and then comes back for a few days even tho i dont stop taking prevacid...i eat the same stuff almost everyday,,,i have no idea what triggers it,,,i do have anxiety tho and am still a bit stressed about mothers illness and passing,,,dont sleep very well,,have lifted the bed like suggested on this forum...drink lots of water, have regular BMs...kinda driving me up the wall as i really want this to go away...so if prevacid not working can you maybe suggest another one that might,,,,do you have a low carb diet,,i still hav to look into that,,,i have lost over 25lbs since mother got sick and am now at 120lbs,,,i do smoke but not much...have you tried any natural things like the DGL or propolis or mastic gum...
i would really appreciate any help you can offer me
thanks again
hope to hear from you soon
Spunky

Re: lower rib cage pain?

you guys are making me worried....

the pain that I explained is almost completely gone
I don't really feel the heartburn anymore.
i'v been on a diet

will the pain/heartburn come back???
or will I be able to do eat, and do things like before?
I'm only 18.. :|

also i'm not taking any medications.
(only amoxillin for 2 weeks, and prilosec for 1 week after amox)-last month

Re: lower rib cage pain?

Don't be worried. The people here are the rare cases, the ones who have major problems that go on and on.

You might have occasional stomach pain in the future. (The occasional upset stomach is a normal part of being human.) It is unlikely that you will develop digestive problems serious enough to interfere with your normal life.

Re: lower rib cage pain?

I have suffered from AR for several years and taken Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, you name it, I have tried it and nothing would work until I decided to try Zegerid, which is over the counter, but it works... I take it once a day and it stops the pain burning all of it...but I miss one dose, and I know it...its good stuff.
