Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

Iím desperate.

This all started about a year ago. I would swallow liquids and feel a sort of tightness in my throat before it would go down all the way. Sometimes there was a gurgling noise, like the liquids were just hanging out in my throat. I didnít pay much attention to it at the time. I was on Amoxicillin twice a day for acne and I thought it was just a side effect of the drugs.

Then sometime in January it became painful to swallow liquids and some foods, so I stopped the medication. But the problem persisted. I went to a GI specialist who performed and upper GI endoscopy and found nothing wrong. I was diagnosed with Gerd and given Prilosec, 20 mg, twice a day.

Then came the vomiting. For the last two months it has become increasingly difficult for me to swallow anything, both liquids and foods. I feel like the food gets stuck in my throat, which causes me to feel nauseas, which causes me to throw the food back up. Sometimes just a little undigested food comes up, sometimes itís an entire meal. This feeling occurs while Iím eating, with every bite and every sip, so itís nearly impossible for me to have a full meal and drink. And itís every single time I try to eat. Iíve lost so much weight because even though my appetite hasnít changed much, Iím eating less and less. Iím pretty much living on Boost Energy drinks right now.

I had a barium swallow done to see if it was esophageal spasms, but again it was negative. The problem still persists though and I donít know how much longer I can live like this. Has anyone ever experienced this? What are my options here? Please help me. Iím supposed to go back to college in the fall and I donít think Iíll be able to go back if this problem doesnít go away. I just want to be able to eat again.

You need to go back to Dr. Could it be a hiatal hernia?

The other possibility is that of "stomach migraines." I have not suffered from those but have heard of people who suffer from this condition. It is related to an overstimulation of the vagal nerve.

If all else is normal, I wonder if they can prescribe medication to see if they can help your autonomic nervous system "calm down" or relax.

There must be a reason or cause for your symptoms. They have just not found it yet. You must go back to the doctor or be referred elsewhere for a second opinion.

Good luck!

Hi,
I agree about a Hiatal-Hernia, I have one and have experienced ththe same problem.
I also have had a similar problem with H.Pylori.
I think an Anxiety Medication might help but do go back and ask for further investigations.

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

you might have a slight stricture thats what i have also / go to a different gi dr and get scoped and tell him to look for strictures to open up. i went thru the same thing. there is hope ! and no its not in your head, my friends all told me it was. i have to go every year or so to have them opened up again, i am going again later this coming month and will let you know what how i feel after wards. the dr that did it all last year wasnt a very good one and hurt me a lot. this year i have a better dr by far. even if you have a slight stricture you feel it a lot !! i do !! i have two of them one up high where my throat meets my chest and one between my breast's.

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

Thank you all for your responses. Right now my doctor has me on Sucralfate four times a day, Dexilant once a day and Ranitidine twice a day. They still donít know whatís wrong, but they seem to be trying the Ďtake every medicine until something worksí approach.

Itís very frustrating because I started this regimen on Thursday and feel I should wait a while before I call in. But so far there have been zero improvements and Iím still getting sick every time I try to eat or drink anything. How long should I wait before I set up another appointment? I'm starting to lose hope that this thing will ever be fixed.

Iíll ask about the hiatal hernia, but I was under the impression that that was something that could be spotted through an endoscopy. And mine was pretty much clear. I donít know, apparently I appear healthy, but I canít eat and Iím still losing weight like crazy. A stricture sounds promising though. I'm going to check with my doctor about that. Let me know how yours turns out!

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

RIX, if you cant eat or drink to go the ER, tell them its a emergency and see what happens, you have to be able to eat and drink. i went to the er myself last year when this got so bad, and the next day they had me set up with a gi dr to do a dilation of the throat / i hate to tell this bad news but if you cant eat / drink enough to stay alive, go to the er and tell them that you cant get a dr soon enough and that you cant swallow at all
you cant go on like this (many hugs) and i will let you know what happens when i go also)
i know i have a stricture for sure just have to have mine opened up i guess yearly at this point

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

Endoscopy would have found a stricture, but sometimes it can actually miss a hiatal hernia.

I see you last posted a few days ago, hopefully by now the Dexilant is working for you. If you are still vomiting a lot, antiemetics such as Zofran are an option.

You may have delayed stomach emptying. If that's the case, Reglan or Domperidone might work better.

Go back to the gastro doctor and press for an answer. You may have to press hard, but there is an answer out there.

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

Just an update. I had another endoscopy done yesterday and again they found nothing. No strictures, no narrowing, no hernia, no ulcers. They did dilate my esophagus but Iím still vomiting and as of this week Iíve lost 5 more pounds (I canít afford to lose anymore). I also have an unrelated infection so Iím back on antibitoics, the very thing that most likely caused this mess in the first place.

It seems that I am destined to remain sick forever. I feel so helpless. I just want to be able to eat again.

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

It really sounds to me like you need to be tested for gastroparesis and other motility disorders. Basically, your whole digestive tract is lined with muscles that move the food along, and it sounds like your muscles aren't working correctly.

Reglan might help a lot, or good old antiemetics like Compazine or Zofran.

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

Another update.

My doctor has decided it's anxiety (i.e. he can't find anything physically wrong so now he's trying to blame me and my mental state). He's trying to prescribe me Paxil which I find incredibly suspect, especially since he's not a psychiatrist. I've never suffered from depression and I don't feel I get any more stressed than the average person. I don't want to get hooked on medicine that I don't really need to solve a condition I don't really have.

So, is it time to start looking for a new doctor or should I take the drugs? It seems like since I've come home my condition has worsened but I don't see how antidepressants are going to cure what is clearly a GI problem.

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

Hi,
I think you should give this medication a try.
I was prescribed Xanax when I had your symptoms and I found it helped me to cope.
I was positive I was not an anxious person but I realised that my symptoms were causing me to worry without thinking about it.
If all your tests have come back negative then the least you can do is give this medication a try.
I wish you well,

Solofelix.

Re: Difficulty Swallowing and Vomting, Yet All Tests Are Negative

Hi,

I just posted something and I will attach my post at the end. This very second I am having the same exact feeling in my throat - I was told by two different doctors that I have Acid Reflex/GERD. I too get the gurgling and like something is stuck. I have been on GOOGLE for three days and many people with Acid Reflex have the same problems.

Hello,

My name is Mary and I was recently diagnosed with Acid Reflex/GERD. Approximately twelve days ago today, I woke up with severe nausea; to date, I have not thrown up. The desire to throw up is strong and it last quite some time. With this symptom, I am burping often throughout the day. I also feel tightness in my throat; however, I am able to swallow well. Maybe once or twice a day my mouth gets watery like when you are about to throw up. I would like to note that since given medication by my Dr. the burping has stopped and so has the nausea. Because of the nausea I have no desire to eat; however, with the medication which has stopped the nausea, I am eating again. I am eating extremely healthy afraid to get that nausea feeling back so I am loading up on ďJuicesĒ from my local health store Ė the kind where they put my vegetables in the machine and juice it. I also have a feeling in my stomach that I am starving and then a strong burning sensation. All of the symptoms are new to me and with HIGH anxiety that I suffer with everyday, I am scared. I went for a second opinion and the second Dr also told me that he feels I have Acid Reflex and told me to continue to the first medication the first Dr gave me. For three days I have been on the medication; however, also during these three days I have been on GOOGLE diligently seeking natural alternatives for my diagnosis. I came across many sites on Apple Cider Vinegar (Mother). I have read exceptional testimonies on how it not only treats Acid Reflex but other aliments as well. Today I woke up with severe nausea again. I was so sad. I was hoping to wake up to a new day but it just didnít happen this way. Instead of grabbing my pill, I woke up, heated water and added two tablespoons of ACV and drank it with a straw. The nausea subsided almost immediately and without any medication in my system, I just drank a smoothie from Jamba Juice and ate Oatmeal successfully. This is my first day drinking ACV. Has anyone here been told they have Acid Reflex and if you have, has anyone on here experienced my same symptoms? Does ACV really work for this problem? I have to be honest and say the nausea diminished almost immediately and I have not taken any prescribed medication today. How often should I consume ACV during the week? Also, is it normal for my tummy to feel weak/tender? I donít have pain Ė it just feels tender. I guess tender best describes the feeling. I understand that eating meat, oils, etc. bring AR on; however, I am an extremely healthy eater and I have been a vegetarian for years and I do not eat fast food. I think I should add that about a week before this gross sickness broke out, the Superior Market had Cherries on sale for 69 cents a pound and they also had Mangos on sale, 2 for $1.00. In three days, I consumed about 3 pounds of Cherries and 6 Mangos, peel and all. My mom says that this could have brought it on Ė can fruit lead to Acid Reflex? Would it hurt to take the medication with the ACV or should I just stick with the ACV. It is just so hard to believe that ACV would work so well. I would appreciate any feedback from anyone going through what I am going through. The anxiety makes me feel like I am sicker than what the Dr tells me. My anxiety began when my husband died 10 years ago in a car accident and I have a fear of death. I would appreciate any feedback on ACV Ė it just sounds hard to believe. So if you have any experience with ACV I would LOVE to hear back from you. I am going to drink it again at lunch. It isnít the best tasting stuff but I am able to consume it with hot water. (Sorta like a yucky tea) ALSO Ė CAN STRESS CAUSE ACID RELEX or is it solely from food intake?

Stress and anxiety does mess up your digestion. If you have severe issues than that could be the case. But always get second opinions. Try ways to reduce your anxiety naturally
