My ent has prescribed 40 mg. of prilosec to be taken once a day for a month. He doesn't really know if I have lpr but I told him I seem to have the symptoms so this is what he prescribed. Has anyone taken it and how long until it helped.
I haven't had that side effect, but then nothing constipates me. Constipation is, however, a common side effect of many meds. Often your system adjusts after a few days or a week and returns to normal. If it doesn't, I would question the doc about it. There are other ppi's that you may find more compatible with your symptoms.
Did your doc specifically suggest once per day? My doc, and others I know of have prescribed 20 mg twice daily. If you're not sure, it might be worth clarifying.
I'm taking it for acid reflux due to a hiatal hernia. It worked for me almost immediately (2-3 days). Others will tell you it took a couple of weeks for them. It may depend on the severity of the condition.

I take Prilosec 2X20mg a day. Get few side effects from it, maybe a little dizzy when standing occasionally. Everyone is different with this stuff. If you do a search on Losec or any PPI you will find a list of side effects. I have improved a lot but been on it since March. Really have to watch what I eat though, the wrong food and my reflux comes back strong so for me it isn't a magic pill, no cure all. I also take a 40 mg Pepcid at bedtime.
Some people do get constipation from the PPIs. Might go away as your body adjusts, or you might do better with a different type of PPI.
Most people have minimal short-term side effects. With long-term use, you may run into dependency and rebound symptoms when you stop, and if you stay on it for years, then you need to worry about nutrient absorption.
On the upside, when I first started taking Prilosec, I saw the benefits in less than two days. It really is amazing how much it helps the first time.
