From: Mary - No food can cause Acid Reflex ?

I posted about my relasp yesterday - strong nausea. Of course the Apple Cider Vinege relieved the symptoms in minutes. I ate a small breakfast but did not eat until dinner time - could not eating have caused acid?

Yes, it is possible that skipping meals and having your stomach empty for a long time can also cause symptoms.

I get my worse reflux 2-3 hrs after meals, when the stomach should be emptying and the acid levels lowering. If I eat something it seems to help. Not sure why.

You experience heartburn then because the food the acid was working on is gone or mostly gone, and all you have is the acid left, which has nothing to do but cause problems and back up into your esophagus. Heartburn is usually more common two to three hours after meals. I have exactly the same problem.

Once you eat again, you provide the acid with something to work on, so it goes to work on that food rather than back up into your esophagus, etc. It is a bit of a vicious cycle. The problem is not the acid. It is that it backs up where it is not supposed to.
