| Re: Woke Up w/ Gasping for Air
They are similar medicines. Both are Proton Pump Inhibitors that act to block acid production. There really isn't any reason to take two at once, but some people respond better to one and some respond better to another one, so maybe the doctor wants to be sure ONE of them works?
The question is, do you really need to take 2 PPIs every day? Keep in mind, in about half of patients, these drugs produce a form of physiological dependency. (It's not addiction because they don't affect the brain. It's just physical dependency.) If this happens to you, then you may have worse symptoms for a period of time after quitting.
If you don't want medicines right now, try something harmless first: Elevate the head of your bed, if you haven't already. Either buy a wedge pillow or prop up the bed on blocks, but either way try to raise your head 6 inches. Also, avoid eating late at night.
It might help to journal your dietary triggers for acid reflux. Triggers can vary from one person to the next.
