Extreme nausea. Need opinions!

Hello! I'm Taylor. I'm new here so I hope I am posting this in the right section.

In early March I threw up one night out of no where. After that I constantly felt nauseous and went to the doctor. My doctor told me that I had gastroenteritis and gave me medicine to take. I still felt nauseated constantly. In the morning, after every meal and when I went to bed. I started to feel like acid reflux so went back to my doctor. He gave me Prevacid to take. Still nothing was helping. There was this constant feeling of me feeling like I was about to throw up and some nights I would throw up. I'm 17 so I was still in school at this time and was missing a ton of school. (Actually I never went back for the year and got home tutored its that bad.)

My dad decided to take me to his doctor to see what he thought. His doctor gave me medicine to help with the nausea and told me to stay on the Prevacid. Still nothing was helping.

Then in May I went to a hospital to see a Gastro specialist for more help. I got the Barium test done and the Upper GI done. All that was found in those was acid reflux. Last month I did the nuclear stomach emptying test and they said my food wasn't digesting quick enough. Now I'm on Erythromycin.

Now this helps a lot when I eat small meals. If I ate a large meal like dinner I'll throw it up later that night. I still get nauseous, I still get sick. What else could this possibly be? Any advice or tips for someone possibly experiencing the same thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ah. You have gastroparesis (GP). That's the formal name for "your stomach doesn't empty quick enough." I have this, too. Luckily mine isn't as severe.

Erythromycin is a first step. You can also try Reglan and Domperidone, or even stuff like Zofran.

However, diet is also a big part of GP treatment. You need to eat small meals, if you eat big meals, you get bloated and sick. Try to eat low-fat, as fat is hard on the stomach. Fiber is also hard on people with GP. I know everyone says veggies and whole grains are best, but you need to eat those foods in small portions only. Cooked veggies are much easier to digest than raw ones, in general.

I have nausea GERD. I felt pretty sick all the time and had an endoscope. One of the first things doctor gave me was Reglan, an anti-nausea medicine. It worked great and was cheap. The reason I'm posting is Reglan has a bad side effect I encountered. It made me so tired all I did was sleep all the time. I wanted to quit my job so I could sleep more. I was buying lottery tickets thinking if I could win, I didn't have to go to work and I could get more sleep. I had no confidence in my work skills. Luckily one of my family members noticed I was sleeping til noon on saturdays when I usually get up at 5:00am every day. Looked at the Reglan side effects and called the doctor. They told her to have me stop taking the medicine Immediatly! In 2 weeks of not taking Reglan I was back to normal and couldn't believe I wanted to quit my job & was buying lottery tickets thinking I could actually win just so I could get more sleep.

When I visited the doctor about it, he didn't want to discuss it. It kinda irritated me thinking I almost quit my job over it and he didn't want to talk about it. Guess he was worried I was going to sue or something. Yes, my reaction was one of the side effects.

Good luck on your problem.

Re: Extreme nausea. Need opinions!

Hi Taylor:
I have a child who had a bad side effect from the Reglan. It has some nasty side effects so be careful, especially if you notice any twitching- it can become permanent.
It sounds like GP, and its very important that you eat at the same time every day, several times a day, like you said you're doing. Also you might try going to a homeopathic doctor. He helped my child by giving him fennel for the vomiting(its a natural plant). Also finding out the cause of the problem may help in some way. Have you been tested for diabetes? GP is caused by several different things. If gets extremely bad, there is a pacer machine that they can surgically insert into the stomach to force the stomach muscles to do its job. I would do lots of research if they suggest surgically removing parts of the digestive tract, it may cause bigger problems.
K.

Good point about Reglan, both of you. It can have nasty side effects, especially with long-term use.

Domperidone is safer, but it's not sold in the US. Zofran is also safer, though it's more expensive too.

Re: Extreme nausea. Need opinions!

Thanks for the advice!

I had another appointment with the gastro specialist because I'm still feeling sick especially after dinner. I've been eating bland food for dinner like a roll or soup just so I don't feel so nauseated. I've lost over 10 pounds. My doctor said that instead of my food emptying in 120 minutes it emptied in 125 minutes so it wasn't much of a difference. He said he doesn't understand why I'm still nauseated and throwing up. When my family is having dinner sometimes I feel well enough to eat it and later throw it up. I don't throw up after every meal. He took tons of blood work and said he was testing for a lot of things. When he got the results back he said the celiac counts were a little high and next time if the count is even higher I will have to get another endoscopy. But he told me to not change my diet yet.

This morning I had a bowl of cheerios which I never have had a problem with. Also had a half a cup of coffee which I never had a problem with either. I've felt extremely nauseated all day and haven't eaten since. It wasn't even a heavy meal and I took the Erythromycin and still sick.

This has been going on now for 6 months. I start school in a little over a week and I have to be better. I know I will not be able to tolerate the nausea in classes. I spent my whole summer sick on the couch. I just don't understand what is taking so long for it to be over with.

In the mean time while waiting for my next appointment and waiting for the next test to be done, I just don't know what to do to help.

With nausea, the first thing to check is the liver. Otherwise keep your meals small if it helps your reflux. There's always Sherry Brescia's Great Taste no Pain regime. She covers many gut problems and knows what she's talking about. I use it, am off Nexium after trying to get off it for YEARS.

Re: Extreme nausea. Need opinions!

Sometimes folks with relatively mild GP can still have very troublesome symptoms. Or, it might be something else. If the symptoms happen after foods with fat, it could be a gallbladder issue. Or sometimes reflux alone can cause nausea.

Could it also be Krohn's disease? I don't know much about it except for not being able to eat at all. Also even if they aren't sure about celiac disease, I would cut out all wheat, its just too risky. I have a cousin if she touches wheat or corn she's sick as a dog.
