I've been on omeprazole for 10-15+ years. I want to get off! I have tried many times, but when I skip a day, I know it. My doctor said not to go off the meds cold turkey but to skip one day....stay at that dosage for several days and then cut down to every two days, etc... (Basically, to wean off of it.)
What are some NATURAL acid reducers? I really want to eliminate the meds if I can...
Any help?
(My main concern is that my eGFR and creatinine levels are off--kidney function tests)

Not one soul on here has listened to me yet and again...I swear by Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar with, "Mother". I do not take any medications to treat my Acid Reflex. I threw mine in the trash and refuse to take them. Look at all the damage it does to your body.
Some people find that the vinegar helps. Others find that it makes symptoms worse. If you want, try it once and see what happens. If it hurts, don't do it again.
Weaning off is hard for some folks, and it takes about a month for the body to get used to doing without the PPI, sometimes two months. Don't push too fast, and don't be afraid to use weaker medicines like Zantac or Pepcid or Tums to get through the rebound. Once you get through it, you shouldn't need them anymore. Some discomfort is OK, but you don't want to go cold turkey through severe pain, since that will just irritate your digestive tract more.
Most of all, during the taper you need to be very strict about the "GERD lifestyle." Identify and avoid all your dietary triggers. When you're through the rebound and feeling decent, then you can try indulging a bit. Prop up the head of your bed about 6 inches. Sit or stand up straight during meals and for 2 hours afterwards. Avoid bending over.

Weaning off is very hard for some people. I am finding it extremely difficult to get off omeprazole. If you feel it when you miss one day, it may be too painful for you to do the alternate day regime. I do it by reducing the dose in tiny increments, as much as you can bare and reduce slowly to minimize the pain from rebound, but it takes a long long time to get off!
