Does caffeine and orange juice make your reflux worse?

I know they say that caffeine and orange juice are triggers. I have 1/2 cup of orange juice every morning just to get my fiber down. (I put the fiber in the juice) Anyway, I stopped the o.j. for two full weeks and it didn't make any difference in my reflux. So I am taking it again. Also I have one cup of tea in the a.m. No coffee, just one tea bag (black tea) Could that little bit of caffeine be a trigger? I'm having a hard time giving it up. Just wondering if it bothers other people.

I have dropped pretty much all caffeine and live off water and caffeine free soda once a day at lunch and still have problems so idk. I think it all depends on the person. I haven't offically been diagnosed yet but have almost all the tell tale signs.

Re: Does caffeine and orange juice make your reflux worse?

Some people can still handle the caffeine and orange juice with reflux. Most can't.

My Gastroenterologist gave me a list of foods to avoid when I was diagnosed and the caffeine, OJ and tea were all on the list.

Most types of teas have components in them them that can loosen your lower esophageal sphincter which can allow acid to come up.

Maybe you could try one or the other at a time to see if you have symptoms with one more than the other.

If your symptoms are really bad, you may want to avoid all of them.

At my worst with my acid reflux symptoms, I drank water and soy/almond milk only.

Re: Does caffeine and orange juice make your reflux worse?

I can have caffiene but orange juice for me is a disaster. It is trial and error to find out what are triggers as it varies so much.

For me, any citrus causes pain almost immediately. Coffee and tea are bad, but a little chocolate after dinner actually seems to help me digest better.

So, trial and error. See what works for you.
