Severe GERD or what?

Hi,

I am a 52 years old female who is suffering from a severe case of GERD or?? I am a runner of 30 years, not overweight, and I do not smoke. My symptoms occured two months ago. My diet for the past two months has consisted of oatmeal/chicken soup/apples/water and little else. Even with drastic changes in lifestyle my symptoms are not subsiding.

For two months now, severe nausea for up to two hours after I eat, lump feeling in throat, it triggers my asthma to new heights (which I understand is a side effect of GERD), and I'm so extremly tired that it is difficult to get out of bed let alone out the door. My life has pretty much come to a screeching halt.

I had a colonoscopy six months ago-fine, endosocopy at the same time-fine. Doc still thinks GERD because they don't know what else to point to. I'm inclinded to believe theme and I feel the burning whenever I eat. I've also had a series of blood tests to rule out any other underlying conditions, stool sample, etc.

I cannot take med typically perscribed for GERD due to a very severe allergy to sulfites/sulphur. Docs have not found any meds without sylphur somewhere in the background so I am up a creek where that is concerned. Over the counter meds are out as well. I have been treating with a bland diet/lots of rest/stress reduction/ginger, papaya, goldenseal and marshmellow supplements.

I know this cannot be normal. Can't anyone out there help or point me in the right direction.

UGH...I so want my life back :-(

Smile Re: Severe GERD or what?

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you have gerd/acid reflux. I suffered with it for years off and on thinking it was just heartburn. When it got so bad, pretty much everyday no matter what I ate, I went to see my doctor who referred me to a specialist. He found that I had acid reflux and it was eating away the lining in my esophagus. He prescribed Dexilant DR 60 mg. OMG to be free of acid reflux and feel good again! You stated that you are allergic to suflites/sulphr so I looked up what is in Dexilant. It is called sulfinyl chloride, totally different than the suflites family. Talk to your doctor and get a second opinon if he doesn't agree or doesn't know much about the drug. I also was a runner, didn't smoke and not overweight, but still suffered from it. I think it can be chronic, I stopped taking it thinking it had healed (and it did) but months later it started again so I started to take the med and no more acid reflux. I am going to have him prescribe the lower does for maintance. Don't wait, find out and feel better. Good luck, any question for me just ask.

Re: Severe GERD or what?

thanks so much for your quick response 216005. Unfortunatley Dexlant does contain sulfites so its a no go. I honestly don't know where to turn. Due to my allergies, the specialists don't know what to do either :-(

Re: Severe GERD or what?

Wait, is your allergy actually to sulfur? Or to sulfa drugs, which are a type of antibiotics?

If you really can't take any of the drugs, ask your GI doctor for something called a pH monitoring study, to confirm that you have reflux. If it's bad enough, surgery is an option.

Re: Severe GERD or what?

yes, I have an extreme allergy to anything in the sulfer family. So, all sulfa drugs antibiotics and otherwise. There is an antibiotic that I have a pharmacy make a special compount of. I've already spoken with that pharmacy and there is no way to alter the GERD meds.

I've heard of the PH study. I just need to figure how how I can get escape work to have that done.

thank you!

Re: Severe GERD or what?

I totally agree with Janewhite1. You really need get another opinion and make sure the GI doctor is absolutley correct with his diagnose. Like she says, surgery is a option and when you in that much pain it would be worth looking into. Good luck!

Re: Severe GERD or what?

Sulfa antibiotics are not in any way related to sulfur. Do you eat dried fruit? Or eggs? Both have a lot of sulfur. Talk to a pharmacist about the difference between sulfur and sulfa.

Re: Severe GERD or what?

To diagnose GERD they use Upper GI series where you drink barium but I would recommend it be done where it is fully recorded not just still images. There also use ph impedence probes. GERD is not always evident in an endoscopy. If medicines and diet fail, there is the Nissen Surgery. Good luck.

Re: Severe GERD or what?

I have GERD and have suffered with it for many years..the one thing I would like to add is that all of you ladies are in the same age group as I. When I started dealing with Perimenopause my GERD worsened to heights that I cannot explain. I have worked on my diet and also am on Dexilant 60.
The bits of advice that my doctor gave me was this: Carbohydrates are your enemy so try a Low Carb diet. Try to relieve stress and track if your GERD worsens at different times of the month. Your hormones are so crazy that they cause your body to really react badly.
Anyway, I have to say that I don't believe the Dexilant is helping me and I am thinking I am going to give it one more week and then stop it.
I started the low carb regime today so I will let you know if it helps me. I have read that it does help some.
I hope this helps a little....
Good Luck and I hope you all feel better!
b.
