scared crazy!

Hi guys

First off, ive decided to join the forum after reading all your posts over the last few months and have to say ive found the info here invaluable.

So background, this may be long and i apologise, 5 months ago i awoke with a severe sore throat. Thinking it was probably viral i did my best to just carry on and manage it after a month of trying to rid myself of it i gave up and went to my gp and was told my throat was red and probably reflux.
I was told to just gargle salt water, which cured the soreness, i then developed severe pnd and felt a huge lump in my throat, another trip to the dr landed me with omeprazole 20mg a day, which seemed to help and reduced the lump sensation.

Now 5 months on, im experiencing a wide range of symptoms, fatigue, neck and ear pain, constipation, sore tongue with red dots at the tip, i get yellow dots on my tonsils now and then, back pain, intermitten low grade fevers and intermitten swollen lymph nodes in neck.

Its taken all this time to move toward any sort of specialist to find whats wrong, at this time ibe had a chest xray due to a cough i experienced which stopped when taking omeprazole, which was all clear, i was also given a sogmoidoscopy due to some bleeding which turned out to be internal haemorrhoids.

Im really scared about the length of time its taking to get a diagnosis and keep convincing muself its something deadly as it hasnt been ruled out, i have a follow up app with gi on the 7th of dec which is when im hoping they'll decide to do endoscopy.

I suppose what im hpping to gain from posting this is some reassurance that i may one day feel at least partly normal again, between anxiety, symptoms and disregard of drs, i feel lost.

Thanks if you read all that without falling asleep :-)

Re: scared crazy!

Reading the above post back, i sorta realised it doesnt sound much like gerd or lpr, i have some more common symptoms that point to it but there are so many its hard to place them all,i experience excessive gas, intermittent burning sensations in chest and stomach, throat clearing, hiccup a lot after eating. I think thats everything.

Im aware that some of the symptoms aren't typical of reflux which is what scares me, i'm struggling to find a condition that encompasses all symptoms and find myself wondering if there is more than one illness at play here.

Any advice, stories will be appreciated.

Hi there...I have the same thing,,,,i was given prevacid and tecta at different times over the last 7-8 months for sore stomach when i was under severe stress with my mom being in the hospital and then her sudden passing, the doc just handed me over the pills, so i blindly took them,,,they never really worked that great, I stopped taking them cold turkey,,,,,not a great idea,,,so for the last few months i have suffred with acid rebound,,it is getting better tho,,i have gone the all natural way,,DGL tablets ,,papaya enzymes..propolis, honey kinda bland and boring diet,,,,very little red meat, no coffee, chocolate, etc...I am starting to feel better now...i also get the hiccups sometimes after i eat, i still get the heartburn, reflux whatever it is,,,but not to terrible now,,,the thing is tho i NEVER had acid reflux before, i took the meds...occasionally i would get heartburn from drinking to much iced tea or something like that,,,but never as severe as now...i usually have a slight burning in chest and throat and feel my stomach rolling around now,,,i am very hyperaware of anything in my body now...as I lost about 30lbs going through all of that stuff with my mom....
I would say go to the health food store and ltry some of the stuff i said,,it really has helped me,,,and it is not harmful,,,no side effects..oh ya mastic gum works pretty good too,,same with probiotics,,,bvitamins, d vitamins etc,,,u have to get your body back in balance,,,it takes a while, but i would rather do it the natural way than take synthetics,,,not to say that they dont help alot of people, i just dont want to go that route
Hope you feel better soon
Spunky

Hi spunky

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Calms my anxiety to talk about it and read of other peoples stories so i know i'm not the only one.

Sorry to hear about your mums passing, around the start of this whole thing i lost my grandmother suddenly so i can relate, i'll be sure to try your suggestions, anything for some relief and peace of mind.

Re: scared crazy!

Hi!
I hope you find some good answers soon. Im going through alot of testing right now too - nothing is showing anything really weird or anything - is it wrong to hope they see something that is causing all our discomfort? I have lost 50 lbs since the middle of August cause I cant seem to eat anything without feeling uncomfortable- sometimes worse than others. Im also wondering if anxiety is playing a big part in this an no one is figuring that out???? Im on Dexliant 60mg, 2x/day and taking gavescon liquid after I eat and before bed to "put a cap" on my stomach contents - lol!!! I have to go back to the GI doc on 11/5 - not sure what for, but hopefully it will be to tell him the medicine is doign the trick and I feel like myself again!!?? lol...

Hope you feel better soon!!

Wendy

Hi wendy

I know exactly how you feel, i'm hoping something will be found that explains it all too, so no it isn't wrong, it's natural to want to know where our normality has gone!

You're right, as many on this board have stated a lot, the anxiety of not knowing exactly what's going on especially in the diagnosing stages can make it so much worse.
I'm back to the GI next week but they seem more interested in my bowel trouble at the moment which is frustrating so i'll just have to see where that leads before they finally decide to look at the stomach and throat.

Hi there,

It sounds like you have 2 problems that are going together. One sounds like GERD and the other sounds like a fungi infection with the throat. Throat issues cause ears to ache and lymph nodes on your neck to swell (sometimes these can be real painful but they are harmless). You can even see them all swollen sometimes and they are tough but movable to touch. They are just reacting to the throat, that's all and will go away once the root cause is sorted out. The yellow dots indicate small tonsil stones. Might be a fungi too. A throat wash was given to me once which got rid of these type of things a lot. The fevers may be due to perhaps the throat infection or just the acid in your stomach. A coated tongue is typical while having GERD. Back pain is also typical. Fatigue is also typical. So, don't think it might be something serious because it might just be these two things. Hope your doctor check you out soon.

Hi..

Thanks for the reply and reassurance that it may not be anything too serious, just a journey that i'll have to take like everyone else here until things are ruled out and i get to the bottom of it, i have noticed my tonsils have very small crypts and i'm told that's typical of tonsil stones, i think i may be swallowing whatever comes out cause i've never actually coughed one out or been able to remove the stuff i see, if that is the case is it harmful?

Re: scared crazy!

Lol...isnt that the truth - they seem to tease out what they are concerned about and dont really listen to the rest. For me, its the weight loss - the Dr kept going on and on about that and how I might need an endoscopy next - and WAIT - Im losing weight because I cant EAT - are they listening????????? I sure hope you find some answers and get things headed in the right direction really soon!!!

Re: scared crazy!

Hi Wendy,

No no...don't worry about these tonsil stones. I've had them for like 2 decades now and nothing has happened even without any treatment. Sometimes they do come out and sometimes they don't...maybe ending up in the stomach but this doesn't cause anything. Rarely do they grow large enough to cause issues but this is RARE. I don't think you have anything to worry about there. The ear pain and lymph nodes too must be due to the phlem. It might be going like this....GERD - acid - invokes phlem - throat infection - lymph affected - ear pain....

Just might be going in a circle like that. Hmm...you can try something but I don't know how helpful this may be. Try to inhale some steam using just water. I have a small kettle that I use by covering my head over it (careful not to get burned) and switching on and off the kettle as it reaches boiling point so that I get the steam flowing up. If it is phlem, doing this like 3 times a day will give you results in just about 2 days. It'll clear things up quite a bit IF it is phlem that is causing the ear and throat issue. You might find Eucalyptus to be soothing if you apply it externally and just inhale it to your nostrils. There are balms like Vicks that contain Eucalyptus.

Re: scared crazy!

That's what they picked me up on first wendy, my weight..i've always been thin so i didnt see it as much of an issue, i started to gain then dropped it all cause i felt nauseas and didn't eat at all. However they're running with it and i'll just tag along until they find out whats wrong exactly i guess.

Gugulimo- again thanks for the advice, i'll try the steam as i do have some phlegm which i believe is post nasal drip but isn't as bad as it was a few weeks back so maybe it will help.

Re: scared crazy!

So something new, i'm not worried about it at the moment as there's been only two occurences and has been mentioned to my GI who ordered a chest xray that i assume is fine as i havent recieved a call or letter stating otherwise, i've just spat blood, very small amount and bright red, possibly caused by something sharp i've eaten.

Looked at my throat in the mirror and can't see where the bleed would have come from in both instances.
Is this possible with GERD or LPR?.

I'm not convinced if it is possible that it's caused by either of those as i said i have jusy eaten something that has probably sliced my throat or maybe tongue.
Just wondered really.

Re: scared crazy!

Don't know enough to help you there...sorry. With GERD if it is really severe then you can have blood but that is to my knowledge either with stools or vomit. Might have been something just scraping the mouth or throat as you say. I don't know whether throat infections can cause this.....

Re: scared crazy!

You've been a huge help gugulimo thank you.

It probably was something that scraped my throat, i just find i'm very aware of anything that looks or feels wrong within myself since the start of all this, can't wait to get to the bottom of it!

Re: scared crazy!

Ah you are not alone there. Since having this GERD and IBS I'm watching everything like a hawk. The slightest change I notice even though that might be something soooo minor. In a way it is a good thing you know because you are always very aware of everything that is going on and therefore, nothing will escape your attention. It helps with conditions like this because they are ever so changing.

Something I forgot to tell you is the use of honey. If you are not asthmatic then steaming will help you get rid of phlem and also honey really really helps. It takes a little time but if you take say 2 teaspoon fulls 3 times a day, that'll not only soothe the stomach but also get rid of phlem. For acid in the stomach, try popped rice (rice pops) with honey 3 times a day. The rice pops (because they are dry) absorbs the acid in the stomach. It helps and it is a lovely desert :-))
