Unhappy Acid Reflux/acid in throat, belching (no heartburn?) Help!

Is it very common to have Acid Refux symptoms at the age of 19? About a month and a half ago I started getting air bubbles in my throat that I had to push out as burps every once in a while. Less than a month ago though, the symptoms started getting worse and continue to be. Whenever these air bubbles/burps come out (sometimes I cannot control them, sometimes I push them out) I can taste the food that is being digested in my stomach (talk about disgusting). Also, digestive acid occasionally comes back up into my mouth whenever I try to push an air bubble out. Problem is usually worse whenever I eat chocolate and coffee. The symptoms start as soon as I am finished eating and continue for roughly 4 hours, starting out more servere and then letting off. I do not have any pains in my chest though such as heartburn.

I went to visit the health clinic on campus at my university and talked to the doctor there who told me that it is most likely air bubbles getting trapped in my stomach whenever I drink water. I don't believe this is the case though because the symptoms can occur even if I don't drink anything. (the air bubbles occur after only drinking water too though and not food?) I don't drink pop/soda either ever and rarely drink coffee. Anyway, she also told me I could try out Zantac. I bought some and have used it, with no luck- I don't believe it has helped out a bit. I haven't tried taking it before eating though, only after, so maybe changing that will help?

I have read other posts on here but everyone who seemes like they have this problem has not found a "cure," so I'm feeling a little hopeless. It is just so uncomfortable having these little burps that come up when I'm around others, and the taste is disgusting! Plus I guess the fact that my esophagus could also be getting damaged (haha..)

Any others that have had this problem or can relate? I would appreciate any advice. I am probably going to go see the campus doctor again and see if she could send me to a specialist and give me a prescription for something? I'm not sure.

Hi Lauren and welcome! You are not too young to have acid reflux. It sounds like you do actually. I would let the doctor know your symptoms and I am sure you need not go to a specialist yet. My GP gave me my first prescription for my reflux (Nexium) and I didn't go to a specialist for years after. Also eat small meals more often and eat at least 3 hours before you go to bed at night and watch your spices. Basically eat healthy. Your doc will know if you need a specialist or not. Good luck to you and keep us posted on your journey. Sorry you had to come to these boards for help but there are good people here.

Low acid all,

Re: Acid Reflux/acid in throat, belching (no heartburn?) Help!

look up LPR, on Healthboards. I think you have laryngeal reflux, which doesn't present with all the same symptoms that "regular" reflux does. My only symptoms were burpiness and a fullness in my throat. My ear nose and throat doctor diagnosed me with LPR back in August. Although I seem to be the exception to the rule, I am now off all medication and feel great. Wishing you the best.

Hi Lauren,
I have been on Prevacid for more than a year. Once a day tabs. I feel okay, and glad you are ready to jump on your condition. It's important. You can get an anylsis of your esophagus that will make you more at ease. Good Luck

I have the SAME issue. I am 17 years old and I've had the small air bubbles in my throat for 2 weeks now. My doctor gave me omeprazole but that didn't help. I feel so helpless like there's no cure. Please let me know if anything works. I have these silent burps all day everyday.

Have you tried taking pure aloe vera of any sort? I had HORRIBLE stomach problems; started taking a pill, which is strong, strong aloe vera and I no longer need any medicine. Told another person about it and he bought some juice at Trader Joe's and also is much better. Aloe Vera is a natural healer.

I can not promise, but if I had that problem, I would definitely give it a try; you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It has helped people with all sorts of digestive problems.

Re: Acid Reflux/acid in throat, belching (no heartburn?) Help!

UPDATE:

I came back to my home for Christmas break and went to see my doctor about a week and a half ago. She put me on Omeprazole (take one pill before meal each day). It hasn't helped at all yet, but my doctor said it would probably be a couple weeks before the symptoms lessened. I am to be on omeprazole for about 3 months, and if it isn't better by then, she will more than likely schedule me with a specialist.

Re: Acid Reflux/acid in throat, belching (no heartburn?) Help!

Please do me a favor and go buy yourself some aloe vera and take a sip three times a day. It works much better than any drug and I speak from experience. I was on one prescribed pill for acid reflux and when that stopped working, the dr. told me to take two. I came home and searched the internet and found that aloe vera had helped many. I bought some aloe vera pills and have not been near a prescribed drug in years and my acid reflux was killing me. I could not even drink a cup of coffee, which I love.

Re: Acid Reflux/acid in throat, belching (no heartburn?) Help!

Lauren I have the same problems as you and I was also prescribed Omerprazole which had no effect whatsoever... So then after the doctor assumed it was all anxiety when I know for sure it isn't! Food/drink/acid should be staying down, not come back up. I don't know how that can be anxiety.. No one understands my issue either which is upsetting and frustrating. I'm burping constantly and they mostly need forcing to pass, and then when I do force this liquid stuff comes up and leaves a horrible vomit taste in my mouth.. I also don't get an acidic feeling rarely, although I did a few weeks ago but that only happened once.
