I'm so scared, not responding well to PPIs - anyone else?

Hello all,
I've had success in the past with PPIs for about 8 years or so and then about 5 years ago is when all of a sudden I wasn't getting the same relief. I tried all of the meds, the only one that worked somewhat was Prevacid, so I remained on it until recently. But even so, I still had breakthrough heartburn. Also around the same time 5 years ago I started to get gastritis. I'm in a flareup now. I was wondering, is it possible for the PPIs to cause all of this? I was on them for so long. I'm not trying to take digestive enzymes, DGL, and just ordered some aloe vera to try to soothe my pain. It seems like i'm almost experiencing constant pain in my stomach and throat. I'm going to a GI specialist at UCLA in couple weeks to have the ph test and motility test done. Other than that, I had an endoscopy done last year and showed only mild inflammation. I'm also tried stopping gluten, but only for a week, so maybe I need to give that longer. I'm just at a loss and scared I need surgery! Anyone else going through a similar situation? Please respond. Thanks!

-Crystal

Hi sorry to hear about you heartburn problems. I to have had issue with PPI just stop working or work way less than they use to. At one point I was on PPI twice a day and H2 blocker twice a day out of control!!! I now only take zantac 150 twice a day plus a liquid probiotic twice a day. I also supplement tums when needed. The probiotics I think would really help or are atleast are worth trying they hay help me a lot I also take one capsule probiotic daily also tis has been going on for about three month with good success so far. I am waiting for this to stop working and going back on PPI but so far so good. What sort of throat pain are you exp.?? I have a hiatal hernai and Barrett's non cancerous so I have some exp with throat and chest pain issues. Has anything giving you relief?

Hi Stretch1one,
Thanks for replying! Well the only things that give me relief are tums and supplementing with Gaviscon. I wish I could get off of the PPIs, but I'm sooo scared of the rebound acid! I've been off for a couple days before and it's just awful! I'm just wondering if the PPIs are now being counterproductive and are causing these issues. I'm actually taking a probiotic right now too for the last couple weeks, but so far I don't notice a difference.

Good ole Gaviscon thank god for that stuff you know I suffer for about a week after getting off PPI's almost ALMOST made a ER trip due to the burn in my chest sooo close to hitting the panic button but nope not this time LOL. I have to tell you my Dr is pretty flexible path what I take and when he knows I've researched the this thing to death over the last ten plus years so I told him of these weird new symtoms I was having although he's pretty up up things he said maybe you've devolved side effects from the omeprazole he switch me to another then another which I had all been on before at some time then he switched me Dexilant some new great thing nope made me feel just horrible for weeks before he wrote a letter to my insurance company forcing then to pay for Nexuim which I had never had before 40 mg I thought oh yeah the wonder drug this will be great!!! Not so much had dizzy spells, sick to my stomach funny vision thing just felt horrible BUT no heartburn I thought well I guess this is how's its going to be but after one month I could not keep functioning like this so after talking to the dr I was off on zantac only twice a day plus tums and Gaviscon after a week of pain it just stopped became like it had been when the PPI worked for years so for me now its good real good i take a probiotic drink morning and evening and one capsule probiotic mid day. Something esle I didn't include the first time is I take Nattokanise capsule by Solgar it really seem to help my stomach I took it when I quit my PPi about a month ago to aid digestion from a coworker at work wo was Asian.
