Newby Looking for GERD Advice
First time posting on here, but it seems like a great forum.
I'm a 36 year old male from London and have always been fit and well.
In the last year i have had soem episodes of bloating feelings after food etc, sometimes leading to feelings of nausea, however never had any heart burn or similar.
Went on hols to Canada last Sept and during the trip i started feeling some discomfort in my upper abdominal area. Difficult to describe exactly, but was something akin to the feeling you get when swallowing something a bit too big, but kind of constantly. Not painful in itself, just odd. It did cause some issues waking me up whilst sleeping tho.
When i got back i went to the docs and they initial diagnosed gastritis as she said my upper stomach seemed a little tender. She gave me a months dose of omeprazole 20mg once a day and said come back if it hadn't cleared up.
It seemed to get worse and it was waking me up more frequently with the odd sensation, so i decided to go to a specialist. They sent me for a gastroscope thing, and the result of this was i had an inflamed esophagus and a small sliding hiatus hernia.
He upped my omeprazole to 40mg per day and added domperidone before food 3 times a day.
The problem is that none of this seems to have made any difference to my symptoms. I don't have many of the traditional symptoms of GERD...ie no heartburn, taste of acid in mouth, sore throat etc etc. I have a normal appetite and apparently normal digestive system. And during the day it is normally fine, barely noticeable. I have stopped eating any spicy food, fizzy drinks etc, but doesn't seem to have made any difference.
It is starting to get annoying in the night as i tend to wake up about 4am feeling uncomfortable from the esophagus area and slightly sick when i get up to get a drink of water. It is quite difficult to swallow the first mouthful as it seems to get stuck lower down, but then after that it is better.
Does anyone have any ideas if this is all typical? Or should i be trying something new?
