Can acid reflux reach the nose?

This may be a silly question, but I am really concerned seeing that I may need to undergo surgery for my deviated septum in the near future. I have near constant reflux at the moment that hasn't let up since I've taken antibiotics for a UTI.

I've had a scope done through my ENT that says the acid has gotten up to my vocal cords and irritated those. So I am worried that the acid has the potential to go up even further. I am really looking forward to the surgery since it means I'll be able to breathe properly after so long. However, I don't want to risk it if the acid poses a problem.

Re: Can acid reflux reach the nose?

Yes, gastric juices can reflux up to the nose and mouth at times. I would try to get it under good control with all available methods, including medications, sleeping with head elevated, no late meals/snacks, no alcohol, caffeine in evening, etc. If you do all that preop, it is less likely to bother you post op. Be sure to each smaller amounts more frequently, no straws or carbonated beverages to fill your stomach with gas bubbles, no tight belts or waistbands. If you aren't on a medication for it, I would start one now to reduce acid in the stomach.
