stopping nexium

Would like to know what experiences others have had after stopping nexium. I stopped after 3 years and have had heartburn, etc for a week straight. Has anyone else had this happen? I know I shouldn't have stopped it all at once.

Re: stopping nexium

Hello Noni,

I was taking Nexium but my doctor changed me to Priolosec. I have to take these two or something similar or I start getting serious acid reflux and almost unbearable pain. What makes this scary is I am a SCI but have retained much sensation in my abdomen. I would never quit taking it unless my doctor approved it as the acid can seriously damage the esophagus.

Good luck.

Re: stopping nexium

Thanks for your reply. I did just start back this past Monday, but am taking prilosec because the nexium is so expensive. What bothers me is when I started on nexium over 3 years ago, I didn't have real bad heartburn, once in awhile it was more of a silent reflux, that affected my throat, vocal cords. But now after stopping it it is bad and pretty constant. Anyway hope the prilosec kicks in soon.

Re: stopping nexium

I heard that nexium has a rebound effect when you stop taking it especially after so long. Try taking slippery elm from health food shop I heard it can help sooth. Hope it helps.
