I was recently diagnosed with acid reflux. It started in January with nausea but it never really effected my daily life. A week ago today I got home from work, ate dinner and got really sick. Shivering, nearly vomitting and ever since then I've been dealing with what seems like symptoms of reflux. I called the doctor Saturday and he reccomended I start Prilosec. Took it until I could get an appointment and they gave me Dexilant. The nausea has gone away but everytime I eat I get what feels like food stuck in my throat. Last night is made me nearly vomit again. This morning I didn't eat anything but after I bent down a little to brush my teeth I felt it come up and it's been stuck in my throat since then, so about 5 hours now. No swallowing, or drinking is helping. I have barely eaten all week and have dropped 10 whole pounds already. I was able to eat a little bit yesterday and thought things were going well until I had dinner. I am avoiding all no-no foods, sitting upright for hours after eating and taking my meds. I feel like I can't live with this. I am starving but feel like I can't eat because there is food clogging my throat. What can I do? I called a GI doc but they can't get me in until next Friday and the first appointment is talking with the doctor only, no testing. I don't know how much longer I can handle not eating. I also haven't had a BM in 4 days. I need some relief! Please help. I am only 24 and am active, not overweight. Took a pregnancy test on Monday but it was negative.
Hi Katie, your symptoms are very similar to mine. I have been dealing with this for over 3 months and have lost 15 pounds now. I'm already thin to begin with. I can only tell you from my experience so far what I think about your situation. There is no food stuck in your throat. If it is in fact acid reflux the food feeling is actually a referred symptom. It's due to excessive acid. For me that has been the worst part and it can drive you NUTS! I have been on nexium... No go.. Made me even more bloated and anxious. Next came dexilant. Severe diarrhea for 2 weeks. Was not able to leave the house and still had reflux symptoms with the feeling of food stuck! Thought I was going to lose my mind. I'm now on protonix. It was not working. Still had nausea, regurgitation ect ect... I finally doubled it myself desperate for some relief. It has worked much better but I still get that warm feeling in my throat and occasional burning in stomach. Here's what I have done through research. I juice carrots twice a day. It's actually pretty good. I eat very clean foods. Salad. Baked chicken. Egg whites. No junk food at all! Ugh! I was a coca cola addict but had to give it up. Lots of fruit. Cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes. No citrus fruits. Every night I drink a warm cup of fresh ginger tea I make with honey. Very good for digestion. Take probiotics at least a 20billion count out of the refrigerated section from whole foods. A digestive enzyme before any large meal. I use a vegan brand. Eat 5-6 meals a day rather then the usual 3. I hope you get to feeling better. It does take Time for these types of meds to kick in so be patient. :-)
Wow, thank you so much for your great answer. What are probiotics? Does it come in some type of food form or a liquid? Also, what type of digestive enzyme do you take? Lastly, how do you make your ginger tea? Just water and ginger? I saw tea is on the bad list which really bummed me out! I love hot tea <3
Thanks a lot again, I found your post very helpful!
Probiotics equalize the bad bacteria in your stomach and intestines. I have found this helps a lot. You can find them just about anywhere but I always buy mine at whole foods. They have a section with just probiotics. Some are kept cold. Buy those. They are suppose to be the best as they are alive. Make sure it's at least a 20 billion count. (This is per my doctor) and that it has at least 5 different strains of bacteria. Anyone at whole foods can help you. I just buy fresh ginger and slice a piece off. About 1/2 inch thick. Peel it and boil it. Let it cool or sit then I just pop it in the microwave when I'm ready. Add honey. Organic is best. If you use too much ginger it will be spicy. But I like it. The biggest thing too is juicing. It's a must. I found a juicer for 50 bucks at kohls and it works great. Hope it helps. :-)
Also I buy Garden of life digestive enzyme. It's a powder form and vegan. I just add 2-3 scoops mixed with water as I sit to eat a larger meal. It helps break down your food so your body doesn't have to work so hard to do it. It doesn't taste fantastic but hey, if it helps I'm game. :-)
