What the hell is wrong with me?

Hello everyone.

I am new to this forum and have a few questions for all you GERD experts.

Is it possible that stomach acid causes stress and anxiety? It seems that every time I have to much stomach acid I get very nervous and anxious, and I cant calm down. I also feel very sick and quite often throw up. And on one occasion, after I threw up my whole body was shaking for about two hours and I couldn't do anything to stop it.

Could all of the mentioned be associated with GERD?

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but as far as reflux causing anxiety, for me that is a big, loud "YES!" I was diagnosed about two months ago and when reflux symptoms strike I feel like I can't swallow properly and there is a golf ball stuck in my throat. I begin to panic thinking I won't be able to breathe next.

I know I'm not the only one who has gone through this, so I would say that anxiety is a normal reaction. Especially if you are new to GERD.

I think it's a vicious circle and anxiety and acid reflux are inextricably linked.

Definitely. When I stress, my heartburn gets way worse.

I'm opposite. When my heartburn/gastritis kicks in, my stress starts to go up. It got so bad I went to the hospital once. I never knew GERD could cause stress (I always heard it the other way around) but when they finally had me try xanax I was shocked at how well it helped me deal with the symptoms once I feel like they are getting out of control. Xanax has been a life saver. I try hard NOT to take it, but when my body crosses that line where my hands and feet start to sweat and I start shivering a little or have any difficulty with breathing I just take a xanax (.25mg) and the symptoms go away in about 5 mins. This is after I've either had too much to eat or ate the wrong thing. I don't have stress BEFORE the heartburn kicks in.
