Has anyone gotten off Zantac, and then had to get back on?

I was diagnosed with GERD about three months ago.

I was put on 600mg Zantac for four weeks. After four weeks, I tapperd off successfully and felt fine for about two weeks, and then the symptoms started up again. I think because I was drinking tea. I then kept getting back on, and then off the Zantac, and now I'm back on 300mg Zantac, with worse symptoms (heartburn) than I was having before!

Has anyone had this happen to the them? I don't understand how I had two good weeks medicine free!

If it is worse than your pre-treatment condition then it is probably due to rebound acid hypersecretion, that is hyper amounts of acid being secreted due to having taken acid suppressants. You can have a couple of weeks of feeling ok until it kicks in. The tendency is to think you need to take more of the drug, but in fact it is the drug, and coming off it that causes the worsening of symptoms. Catch 22

Hi Kacyc!

Thanks for responding. I know that Zantac does promote hyperacidity, but the effects are supposed to only last 10 days (H2 blocer, not PPI). Also, shouldn't I feel better once I'm back on the medicine? I'm still having quite a lot of reflux, even though I'm back on the Zantac.

What they are supposed to do and what they actually do can be quite different!

Although H2 blockers are meant to be safer than PPIs they can also cause rebound, which can last longer than 10 days. It differs from person to person. If you do experience rebound when coming off any acid suppressing drug, and then go back on the same dose you were on before you stopped taking it, you will continue to experience some pain as the dose you were on before you stopped (before you had hyperacidity) will no longer be sufficient for the additional acid until it settles down again. You need to allow time for the body to rebalance, whether that is in deciding to go back on them, or coming off. They are all addictive, the less you take the more you need. Literally.

Re: Has anyone gotten off Zantac, and then had to get back on?

Thanks so much! That is so helpful! I was scared that my condition had gotten worse!

My plan now is to stay on the 300mg until I stabilize, and then slowly wean my self off the way I did the first time, which was sucessful until I started drinking tea (a big no-no for me, unfortunately).

Thanks again!

Sounds like a sensible plan. Good luck!
