Eosinophilic Esophagitis - How long will steroids take to work?
My husband (41 years old) began having sudden and severe abdominal pain and distension in November. After an EGD and biopsy, the GI specialist is frankly not sure if it is EE or Barrett's Esophagus. The symptoms have been totally unresponsive to the Barrett's treatment (Nexium) and are in fact getting worse, so now the doctor has prescribed topical steroids (swallowing instead of inhaling) -- it's not Flovent, but something comparable (as our insurance would not cover Flovent).
It's only been a week, but so far there has been no improvement of symptoms. The pain is constant and severe and is interfering with his daily activities. Does anyone have experience with using steroids for EE? If so, how long did they take to provide relief?
Has anyone found anything else that eases the pain? The specialist has not yet referred him to an allergist, as he wants to see whether the steroid works. Thanks in advance.
