GERD? LPR? NERD? Something else entirely? At wit's end! :(

I'm totally lost now; everybody I see tells me I have generalised anxiety disorder, but I've tried CBT, Hypnotherapy, relaxation remedies and even Crystal Healing, but nothing works. I'm convinced something is physically wrong with me, but I just don't know what it could be. I'm having an endoscopy in 3 weeks, but the doctors I've seen claim it will be clear, so I'm worried I'll contract a throat cancer since cancer tends to run in the family.

This is what I've been experiencing for the last 5 months:

- A tight chest like something is sucking my body inside.
- A tight throat, and a feeling my neck needs to click back in place. It can make it feel difficult to swallow my own spit.
- Wake up with a sore throat daily, but it goes away with any food or drink.
- Excessive mucus; there's an usual taste in my mouth which I assume is from the post nasal drip. Sometimes I need to cough it out but my throat isn't hoarse.
- Occasional ear, arm and chest pain.
- Frequent Migraines which are no longer relieved by my usual medicine.
- Feeling of liquid in the throat and "vurping." Nothing that really burns, it just feels like I'm bringing some liquid up when I belch.
- Weakness and fatigue, especially in the head and legs.
- Palpitations and a feeling of not getting enough air. Tends to happen more at night or when sitting down.

Gaviscon Advance temporarily relieves these symptoms but not entirely. Omeprazole and lifestyle changes do nothing. Lansoprazole sometimes made me worse. It doesn't sound exactly like LPR because I don't have a hoarse voice and sometimes the mucus stops, but it can't be GERD because I'm not sure if I really have heartburn. It can't be anxiety either because these symptoms occur most after eating and when I'm trying to enjoy myself. What else could I possibly be suffering from?

Sorry to sound like I'm in a panic; I'm fretting over my symptoms every day and I'm getting worse all the while with no support from my doctors or family.

I have the same symptoms you are experiencing. My endoscopy didn't confirm anything although there were signs of mild scarring. An eye/ear/nose specialist finally diagnosed LPR and I'm about to start treatment for that.

In addition I also have general anxiety disorder. I don't know what you've experienced but that's totally possible that you have it and it would make your LPR/GERD etc worse. None of the anxiety treatments you listed worked for me. I have worked with my psychiatrist and a tiny dose of Clonazepam at .25mg works extremely well to keep my anxiety disorder at bay. It doesn't mean that drug will work for you but medication could be something to consider.

I agree. I have anxiety and panic disorder and have been on xanax .05 since 1987. I take three a day to keep things at bay. It also helps my Fribo pain. Most of your symptoms sound to me like anxiety and it will make every little ache and pain feel extreme. I would see if the Dr. can give you something for anxiety as well as something for the acid reflux. The acid reflux could be caused by your anxiety. Just my opinion. Hope you get some relief soon.

Low acid All,

Re: GERD? LPR? NERD? Something else entirely? At wit's end! :(

My reflux started with the feeling of a lump in my throat and a few weeks later I started feeling chest pressure, sort of a trapped wind sensation. Regurgitation of liquids eventually followed.

When my doctor told me I had reflux, I sought a second opinion. I didn't believe her because I have never in my life experienced heartburn. But you don't have to have heartburn to have acid reflux.

At this point, I've seen an internist, PCP, GI doc, and ENT and no one has mentioned silent reflux or LPR even though the throat issue is my most bothersome symptom. I've read that people with typical GERD don't have throat symptoms, but people with LPR often don't have actual damage to the esophagus. I had both; now the esophagitis has cleared up, but I still have the throat symptom. Lucky me!

Seeing a surgeon for a consultation next week after a year of this crap. I'm pretty convinced that the only way to make the reflux stop is to fix the anatomical defect, but I'm still on the fence about having my stomach wrapped around my esophagus.

Re: GERD? LPR? NERD? Something else entirely? At wit's end! :(

Hello I am having everything you are describing and I am scared it is something more serious ALTHOUGH I do have Anxiety problems AND have been very overwhelmed the last 3-4 months I see my primary Doc. tomorrow going to have him run tests and I have seen my ENT he didn't see any sign of LPR BUT I had reflux surgery in 2000 and another endoscopy last year my GI said it was only 10% loose? from original surgery put me on Dexilant that helped till recently and I have been over doing it onb eating foods that cause my reflux PLUS my problems seemed to really get bad after I had a nasal wart removed from my sinus cavity in July only thing that really helped was my fav. Prednisone but you can only be on that for so long. have you figured out what is going on yet? do you also spit a lot of mucus up and from your sinuses?

I had my stomach wrapped in 2000 as of today it is only 10% loose and I do have some reflux BUT I think most is brought on by stress and anxiety?

I don't have heartburn, but do have acid/bile reflux
A few weeks ago I had the throat/mucus symptoms you had which I came to the conclusion was acid going into my sinuses causing excess mucus and asthma like symptoms

Stinks doesn't it?
