Red face How do I get my derm to get me on accutane?

Hi, I went to see my derm yesterday and he told me, accutane is the only thing to clear up acne forever, but that it is not for me. Why not, I said. He re plied, let's try minocycline for nine days, differin gel and benzaclyn for four months. But I have already tried all kinds of topical things and it does not work for me. I really want to get on accutane, I have heard great things about it, but I don't want to wait anymore. I am 24 and do want to have children sooner or later and my time for taking this medicine is running out. Someone, help.

I just recently got a new derm who will be prescribing me Accutane. I've tried everything else! I'm not in your area, so I can't suggest a specfic doctor Is this a new doctor for you, or does he/she know your case history? If he/she doesn't know your case history, I would make sure and inform them, that may change their mind. If not, I'd look for a new derm.

Derms usually try to have their patients try other meds before prescribing accutane. accutane is used as a last resort "cure" because of it's potential harmful side effects. Tell your derm your situation, he can't read your mind. If he's persistant on you trying more topicals and more antibiotics seek a new derm, and if you want to be sneaky, tell the new derm that you've already taken many many acne medications in the past, he'll ask you to list them or tell him which ones, tell him you want accutane, he/she should give in.

maybe im lucky.. all I did was tell my derm that I had taken minocycline in the past (took it for like a week, i was really young and lost the pills i think)... so shes like "well, you can try accutane" and that was that

Call me crazy, but I don't think lying about your course of treatment is going to get you anywhere good. Accutane is VERY SERIOUS and should never be taken lightly...it has very serious potential side effects (both physical and psychological) and I really think you should explore other options before you push so hard for accutane. Trust me, I know where you are coming from, as I am 24 and have been on Minocycline 3 times. The next step for me is Accutane, which I really wish I didn't have to take. I am exploring other options before I agree to use it; and I think you should too.

Although I don't think that doctors are always right (who knows your skin better than you?), I do think they give advice for a reason. I suggest you discuss things further with your Dr., and if he/she is not willing to listen to you, or take into account your experience with your own skin; then get a new Dr.

After my first child was born I was covered in acne and boils were cropping up here there and wherever. I was miserable. I'd never been to a dermatologist before but I went see him. He saw the condition I was in and began to suggest minocycline, tetracycline...etc...etc... he then said; if those don't work; we'll see about accutane. I said, "Look, I don't feel like playing the guinea pig...let's skip the "wait and see's" and just go for the sure cure. He agreed and four months later I was extremely pleased with the results. I hated having to get my blood drawn every month to ensure I wasn't pregnant; he told me that even if I was in menopause or tubes tied...etc... it was still required of women.

Firstly, you need to understand that for reasons, u might not be able to go on Accutane, how do you know the exact reason you cant go on it...for eg. you need to have blood tests taken before going on Accutane, if your blood pressure, cholestorol, and liver function etc is not suited to Accutane, these are probably the reasons as to why. Because Accutane can raise these levels to a dangerous high and could even cause things like Liver failure. You really need to question him more as to the actual reasons why he says accutane is "not for u". Each month on Accutane you are required to have blood tests. It isnt just any normal medication you can go on, so this is why...So i suggest you probe more questions to your doc, if its just because he thinks you should try other things first, then say to him that youre really tired of trying all these other medications as they dont work, and then maybe he will resort to putting you on Accutane. Best of luck.
