Here we go...

I've been using Differin for nearly two years now, in the past year mixing it with a bit of benzoyl peroxide before applying it to my face. It's worked pretty well on me. First i used it with tetracycline (about 3 months). About 9 months later, i started taking Alesse (birth control pill). The time in between ending tetracycline and beginning Alesse, i would break out sometimes. Other times, my skin would be clear. This was much better than before i got on Differin, so i have assumed that the Differin has been helping my skin.

I called up to refill the prescription, and found out that they no longer manufacture the size tube of differin that my prescription is for. Sure, i can call up my derm and ask her to modify the prescription, but i do not want to spend $60 on the larger sized tube! I hated spending the $35 per tube of the smaller size as it was.

So brings me to this. I'm going to continue taking Alesse and am planning on using only 2.5% benzoyl peroxide at night from now on.

On another note, i'm looking forward to this. I have two motivators to improve my diet now--acne and health/weight. I already know that when i drink enough water my face gets much clearer. Blah blah blah, I'm basically just ranting and getting this written down.

Hopefully it works, and if anyone has any suggestions I'll be welcome to them.

Re: Here we go...

Thanks surrealmeal for your accounts with Differin gel. Please let me know how it goes. As I said before, I just hit my six monther with Differin and it seems to be going decent. (I started to leave it on during the day, which I know could be very bad for my skin... but I live in Seattle, so there is very little sunlight to be exposed to). Good luck!

Re: Here we go...

*UPDATE*

It's been two weeks since i stopped using differin. I have been using Neutrogena 2.5% BP along with jojoba oil, drinking lots of water and green tea, still on Alesse AND....

...My face looks good! Right now is the "time of month" that i would be breaking out too, and my skin has continued to get clearer. I suppose the differin just stopped working for me after a while. I'm so glad i stopped using it. Now, my skin isn't so incredibly sensitive and dry, and red. It looks almost normal again! If i didn't have dark marks from previous breakouts, my skin would look almost completely clear. I am excited.

I know i shouldn't get my hopes up too much, since its only been two weeks, but hopefully this will continue to work for me. Oh by the way, i used to have moderate acne but with prescriptions, it would be mild. Right now i consider it mild.

I'll keep this updated. Every two weeks seems like a good number. Wish me luck!

Re: Here we go...

Well! Two weeks already eh? Here's another update:

I have continued my regimen (see above) religiously and have had no new cystic pimples. I do have a couple red zits but they are small, painless, and don't have a whitehead.

Some things i may want to mention: I've also been exercising a lot, except for a few days when i was sick. And i picked up some original Apricot Scrub. Sugar and baking soda are great but apricot scrub will probably remain an all time favorite exfoliate of mine. I wanna use it everyday because of how soft it makes the skin, but i know better.

I'm almost positive now that the Differin was just making it worse. Since i had obviously grown immune to it, all it was doing was irritating my skin. The redness was the worst. Lately it hasnt been red and irritated at all. Eating more fruits and veggies has probably played a part too. And i have to mention again the jojoba oil--great moisturizer. I think the little one oz. bottle is going to last me for months.

I guess thats it. I'm pretty excited about it. Hopefully it will continue, but if it doesn't, then at least i've had the past month to look back on. If you have any questions about my regimen or anything, feel free to ask.

Re: Here we go...

It sounds like the Alesse is what really made the difference. Most people do experience a breakout when they start BCPs but then get much better.

Re: Here we go...

I started taking alesse nearly 10 months ago though. Yes, it's definitely contributing, but i'm positive that the exercise, water, jojoba oil and lack of differin have helped even more.
