Question 20mg of accutane for 1st month - does it do anything?

I just started accutane for moderate yet persistent acne with about one cyst per month. My derm prescribed me 20mg for this first month and he said we'll go from there. I was just wondering if 20mg does anything at all. I'm male 165lbs. 23 yrs. old. Any info?

hmmm..at 165 I would think the derm would start you off higher than 120. Im around 140 give or take and my derm put me on at 40 mg to start.. He/she is probably just being cautious or trying to avoid an initial breakout.

I think it would be a good idea, to start a bit lower, to see if you have any more serious side effects.

I am just getting started at 40mg and I weigh about 200lbs.

Usually this is to monitor side effects and minimize the initial breakout. At high doses the initial breakout "can" be a lot and quick......the lower the dose the easier your body will adjust.....However, that doesn't mean you won't get an initial breakout at all, it will just mean you may keep breaking out in general for awhile making it seem as if the accutane isn't working. Good Luck!

I just came back from my derm appointment. Have been on Acc. for nearly 4 mths now and initially started on 20mg. Reason I started on a low dose was so I had less side effects and the initial flare-up would not be too bad.

My derm told me that the course of Acc. is dependent on the number of boxes taken (hence total dosage) so for your body weight, the derm has an idea that maybe you will need to take maybe 10 boxes of 60x20mg capsules. This means you spread out the 10 boxes over a longer timeframe so that the side effects are less severe. You might start off low but you will eventually complete your course, it might just take a bit longer.
