Spironolactone and Weight loss

Hi guys,

As many of you may know, my sister is on Spiro currently; however, a problem has arsien in that she has lost some weight. It's not a large amount, but, given that she is quite thin, she'd prefer that this not be the case. She has lost 2.5-3 kilograms, and we suspect that it is a loss of fluid. Does anyone know if this can be prevented safely, while continuing to take Spiro?

Thanks everyone

As far as I know, Spiro only makes you lose water weight because it is a diuretic. I would suggest keeping hydrated and drinking a lot of liquids.

In addition to the last poster, watch the electrolytes that are being used up. Most people on diuretics are on potassium supplements as well.

Definitely. Your sister should go in for tests every once in a while to check her potassium levels.

Re: Spironolactone and Weight loss

PLEASE watch the potassium as far as it possibly going UP or to high NOT too low. In other words DO NOT take postassium supplements with Sprio. Spiro is a potassium sparring diuretic. You don't lose potassium on it you keep it or gain it over time. Potassium levels should be checked as they can become TOO HIGH not too low which in some poeple can be dangerous. Please read the insert with this med as well.
