Thumbs down Adverse Reaction from IPL laser/light source

Just wanted to share my experience with Intense Pulsed Light (Also known as photofacial, fotofacial, photo rejuvination, IPL, etc)...

I had this procedure in August 2003. If you look back in the posts you can see that I posted right after having it done. At first I had no side effects, except a small swollen area under my eye. This never went away. Over the next couple of months my face started to sag and my skin looked worse. I went back and they really did nothing to help it. I've been told the light source "liquified" the fat cells in my face. The fat cells were then absorbed by my system, leaving some emptiness and very light dents.

I am extremely unhappy and would like everyone to know that this procedure will not help your acne, scars, anything. It is primarily for people with redness (which went away for like a couple weeks and came back for me). And that it will build collagen and help wrinkles or scars is, even when you have positive side effects, not true. There is little to no change in the thickness of the skin.

Though I know this is mostly my doctor's fault (I found someone else online who had been damaged by her) I wanted to warn everyone. IPL has been a nightmare for me and I think you have to carefully weigh the risks before jumping into a procedure like this. Good luck to everyone and let me know if you have any questions.

I did not have levulan. I simply did the IPL. The other woman had ALA beforehand and has worse problems than me. I'm just glad I came out still looking decent and able to look cute if I put on makeup. It looks like acne scarring though, and I had very little to begin with.

The problem is my doctor, just make sure you get someone with not only a great reputation, but many satisfied patients (speak with them!) and years of experience. And take lots of photos, just in case anything goes wrong... Good luck with everything.
