Question retin-a effects not lasting?

In another acne forum I read that the good effects from retin-a were not permanent-that when the medication was stopped, the plumpness of the skin it caused would dissappear and acne scars would then be visible. Is this what retin-a does? I thought it just made the shedding of cells increase and could possibly encourage collagen growth, but did not know that you would have to continue its use for the rest of your life! Theres not much of a chance that if my 18 year old son's acne does ever stop, he will continue with the retin-a!! Anyone have any proof of this?

Re: retin-a effects not lasting?

Your son probably just has hormnonal acne. Acne usually lasts for 5-6 years, then it just goes away. That's what my dermatologist told me anyways. I've had my acne since I was 12 and I'm now 16--it's starting to fade and all I have left are red marks and some scars, which my dermatologist said would go away soon also (except for the scars).

I use retin-a and have never heard what you said was on another forum. I've also just heard what you said you thought.

Re: retin-a effects not lasting?

Sound like he might try a booster and add a glycolic lotion or cream to his face in the a.m. to help exfoliate the skin cells from the top. Alpha hydrox from walgreens. You may have to ask the pharmacist but this is not a px. They just have it behind the counter. He may break out a little more before it starts to work. This will help reactivate the retin a.
