Normal reaction on Glycolic Acid/AHA?

I tried using an AHA moisturizer many years ago, and I remember breaking out in an itchy red rash for around one week before the results were shown. At the time, I had no active pimples, courtesy of BCP and my only problems were blackheads and red marks. Three years on, I'm trying it again all over again, albeit a different brand. It's been four days now and my face has broken out in a mass of red welts. It is terribly itchy and looks awful, feels tight and dry, but I'm holding on. Has anyone has such a reaction with glycolic acid/AHA? Please share your experiences if similar!

My skin definately felt tight and dry and didn't look too good immediately after getting 20% gycolic PEELS. I use Neo Strata's Excuviance products which contains milder version of AHA which is supposed to be better on sensitive skin and all. So, I have never experienced the reactions that you described. However, I just recently purchased Neo Strata 8% AHA Smoothing Lotion which is supposely for face and body. I only used it on my body and I definately experienced the reactions that you mention on the parts of my body that I had applied.

IMO, I think you need to start of gently meaning, use alternate days or 3 times a week until your skin get use to AHA. I personally think AHA is good but it can cause irritation too if overuse. Good luck.

You can try the gentle approach but some people are actually allergic to glycolic acids. What you are describing is the symptoms of that. You can try a different form of glycolic. PCA, Neostrata has a product with this form in it. If the same thing happens you really need to stay away from glycolics. You can try a proper ph salacylic acid. Paulas Choice is a nice moisturizing one that is the proper ph.
