Spironolactone side effects

Hi, my derm recently put me on Spiro to compliment the smoothbeam laser treatments I've been having. Yesterday was my first time taking it, 25mg 2x a day.

I was just wondering if anyone experience palpitations (they certainly don't last very long) from taking the medicine, and if it's something that's going to go away? I also get kind of dizzy - does that go away too?

What side effects did people on Spiro experience?

Thanks in advance!

Michelle

Re: Spironolactone side effects

I never had any side effects, but I never took over 25mg a day. If you're worried, call your doctor.

Re: Spironolactone side effects

Dizziness is a common side effect of spiro (or so I was told) and I had it as well. If it becomes severe, I would tell your doctor. Another side effect is frequent urination -- this was the side effect that ultimately caused me to stop taking the medication because I was literally going to the bathroom twice an hour all day..!!! But it did work well for my skin while I was on it. As for heart palpitations, I never had that and I don't remember it being listed as a side effect, but that doesn't mean it is not one. I would just contact your derm to put your mind at ease.

Re: Spironolactone side effects

Hi there, well I have lethargy and dizziness too from the spiro, it's really annoying...I hope it will go away, I'm on 100mg per day started in mid december. Don't urinate that much actually. Had my period twice in January. My skin is clearing up nicely and when it's all clear will try to reduce to 75 or 50mg (the side effets are usually dose related).

good luck

Hang in there! I had really horrible side effects at first too (especially the lethargy and a "jittery" feeling). I found that eating often throughout the day and drinking A TON of water helped. I'm sure that just time passing and my body getting used to the drug made a big difference too (I started November 21). Just curious-- did your doc tell you to reduce your dose once you were clear, or is that something you decided to do yourself? I could be wrong, but I thought you had to stay on a certain dose in order to get the same level of effectiveness. Also, did your doc tell you the side effects were dose related? In my experience (and I'm sure this could just apply to me), I had just as bad of a reaction to 25mg when I first started, to the 200 mg I gradually worked up to. Please let us know, as this could be very helpful information to a lot of us Thanks, and good luck!

Re: Spironolactone side effects

I started on spiro in Dec, 100mgs, and I had 2 periods in January. I'm hoping this will work itself out and get back to normal as I cannot take birth control pills to regulate my cycle. Other than that, no side effects, but no real improvement yet either.
