i too had normal hormone levels but i insisted to take spiro. my doctor didn't think it would do anything for me but gave it to me anyways. well i have been on it for 8 months and although i get the occasional zit, i have been about 80% cyst free. i agree that my body might not handle androgens and that's why i got those crazy bit cysts. the spiro took care of them completely. how long have you been on spiro?? how long were told you can be on it?? i hear that some women stay on it for years to help with acne. i would hate to get off it and have to deal with the acne again. please let me know. thanks

Cherilyn: I've been on Spiro for 2 years. I asked my PCP for it after reading an article about its antiandrogen effects. My PCP sent me to a derm. The derm said he had not had much success with it but gave it to me anyway. He wanted me to have labs ever 4 months as he was concerned about its effect on the kidneys.

The endo that I just went to said I could stay on it as long as I need to. He said all he needs to do is moitor my potassium levels. He also said it is a mild diuretic and with the low dose that I take, I should not have problems. So even though I don't like the prospect of long term use, I am staying on it until I go through menopause. I hope I won't need it after that but given that I've had acne for all but the 1st 11 years of my life, I may be taking Spiro for the rest of my life.
