For those who get "cystic" break-outs, I have one along my jawline right now. It's about this diameter: ---------- This happens once or twice each year, but this one has lasted for weeks and won't go away. I'm sure there's tons of nasty bacteria in there (staph aureus? Who knows!) Tried a few hot soaks which hasn't seemed to make a difference.
Anyway, I'm wondering if I should go to a doctor? I don't want to take oral antibiotics... I'd like them to just inject antibiotics there with a needle
Has anyone had something like this treated? How, and were you happy with the outcome, and how long did it take to go away?
The best treatment I found back when I got those was neosporin or other first aid cream to help reduce the inflammation and infection. I used to put ice on them, but that seemed to only help temporarily.
I later found out that my cysts were triggered by certain foods, possibly an allergy. Oranges and orange juice was the biggest culprit. I figured that out years ago. I recently discovered that limes caused the few I still got. I've had my allergies tested and I am mildly allergic to oranges. They didn't test for lemons or limes. You might try getting your allergies tested and eliminate those foods one by one to see if that helps.
I forgot to mention that my cysts were also mainly on my jawline, but also neck, hairline, temples, and back. All the hairline, temple cysts went away completely after I stopped eating oranges. And it was much better everywhere else--smaller and much less frequent. The derms ever mentioned cortisone to me, that this would be over 15 years ago. I haven't bothered with dermatologist since then.
A lot of people here have said things like cystic acne and jawline acne are hormonal. But these things definately stopped for me after eliminating these food items.
I have the same exact problem, I get cysts along my jawline. It has gotten milder over the years, but once or twice per year, I'll have a flare up of cysts, some large, some not so large. A week ago I went to the derm and told her about one particularly painful cyst I had (It hurt to turn my head and look over my right shoulder) and so she injected cortisone into it. The relief was almost immediate, the pain of turning my head was gone within 30 minutes and now a week later the cyst is almost completely gone.
Do you break out with other forms of acne, or do you just get the cysts 1-2 times per year? If you have other acne, have you considered topical antibiotics? I'm using some now to my wonderment (I usually have a cyst at all times, sometimes 2 to 4 on my chin) and it's working amazingly.
Otherwise, if you don't warrant a trip to the doctor and some topical antibiotics for maintenance, I'd go with a good acne preventing cleanser (everyone is different but so many people like the Neutrogena) and lotion. Do the normal stuff--don't touch your face, wash makeup off, etc etc. And at the very first sign of a cyst, start with the benzo or salicilic acid in the mornings and whenever you're home alone and can stand the shine, put Neosporin on it. Keep doing this all the time until it's gone.
If it's really bad, a cortisone shot will be helpful right now.
