Can I go tanning for my prom while using Retin-A

Hi. I was told not to be in contact with direct sunlight while using retin-a.
Is tanning in a booth a bad idea?

(i hope that if i tan for prom it will hide some of the acne and scars)

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!
While your using retin A do not go near the sun or a sun bed.
It is very very dangerous, you will have a genuine risk of developing skin cancer if you do.
So don't do it !!!!!!!!!!

Re: Can I go tanning for my prom while using Retin-A

a-sux:
when you're using retin-a you shouldnt go to any tanning booths, BUT as for causing cancer, it wont. UVA rays are the rays used when you tan in beds and booths--these type of rays, even though they f*ck your skin up, do not cause cancer. the sun gives off UVA and UVB rays. these UVB rays are the type that cause cancer. so if you're thinking about tanning only worry about that fact that it will destroy your skin temporarily by making it all red and irritated (since your on retin-a)--but if you continuously goto a tanning salon you might start to look like a prune over time. i wouldnt chance it--but that's just me.

take care
[This message has been edited by sternrad941 (edited 02-12-2001).]

"UVA rays do not cause cancer"

Wrong, UVA rays have been shown to be related to the WORST form of skin cancer. Go to the FDA website and read all about it. Sorry, just trying to clear up some major myths everyone seem to have. Tanning salons are fading fast. Hollywood and the modeling industry are already well aware of the damages off all forms of UV Rays, but it seems the rest of the world hasn't caught on yet. Oh yeah, and ask any real model if they go to a tanning salon and they will laugh in your face. There's no quicker way to end a career.

Re: Can I go tanning for my prom while using Retin-A

excuse me racerboy, it seems i wasnt completely up-to-date in my research. i heard years ago that UVA rays arent harmfull except in aging the skin. now i just ran a quick search and found this report and you're right, uva rays seems just as bad as uvb. here is the report:

Frequent or lengthy exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the most common cause of both skin cancer and early skin aging. The sun is the main source of UV radiation. The UV rays believed to cause skin cancer are the A rays (UVA) and the B rays (UVB). The UVB rays are responsible for severe sunburns. They can also lead to any of the three types of skin cancer. UVA rays were once considered relatively harmless. Now they are thought to play a role in squamous cell and basal cell skin cancers. They may also be a factor in causing malignant melanoma. UVA rays take longer to produce a burn than UVB rays. However, researchers believe the A rays penetrate more deeply into the skin where they can cause abnormal cell reproduction and growth. This can cause skin cancer later in life.

Don't go tanning...

I am on accutane and my prom is coming up but I do NOT want to take the chance of destroying my skin. Plus, I don't know the color of you skin, but so many kids go tanning at my school, and it looks completly fake...orange.

them kids are gonna regret it later. people say that it makes them look so much better. but when the damage starts showing years down the road, its gonna be sad.
