Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

I had heard for sometime that Retin A was amongst the worst acne causing ingedients . Guess what....that is true. I checked it out for myself and they have an ingredient called "isopropyl myristate" that is RATED A 5.

And we wonder why we go on Retin A and break out like crazy for months and months before we ever get clear, and sometimes don't clear at all.

DDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! !

I'm quitting my Retin A and seeing what happens. There is a Bio-Medic retinol alternative, I checked the ingredients list and it has a 2 rated ingredient, but hey....that's nothing compared to a 5. It's more expensive but what the hey.....for acne prone people, that list at Sage Skin Care is very helpful.

What planet are these dermatologists on????!!!!

I totally agree with you...I went on Retin-A cream (the Micro does not have that pore-clogging ingredient) and went through hell for months. I have decided to forget about the doctors and do my own thing. My skin care routine worked for me in the past..I should not have gotten doctors involved. I really believe hormones have alot to do with acne and when I get that straightened out, simple is better when it comes to skin care routine. I do swear by that Sage list too.

Re: Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

I wouldn't be shocked by this discovery at all. I have been using Retin-A for six years now and I can honestly say it's a love/hate relationship. I love it because it has helped with my acne and has made the acne I do have less severe than without it. It also has made my skin look healthier than my pre-Retin A days.

Yet I really do have to start wondering about dermatologists more and more since they'll prescribe Retin-A like they were handing out candy at Halloween. True, it has helped quite a few people control acne, but it also has plenty of side effects which shouldn't be taken lightly. I've come to accept the fact that I'll never be able to get a tan again and cannot spend more than 5 minutes in the sun without fear of getting burnt. I've experienced nasty sun burns from using Retin-A in conjunction with tetracycline, something that should never be done without a good sunscreen. And even though my acne is better than when I was 15, at 22, I still break out quite a bit, no matter how much I watch my diet, exercise, take my medication. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Retin-A leads to breakouts, since my forehead now resembles a mine field after breakouts I had when I was 17 and using Retin-A.

Plus, the doctor from Skin Biology informed me that Retin-A aids in the production of the scar-formulating substance known as TGF-Beta, or a name similar to this. However, I'm afraid to stop using Retin-A since I tried benzoyl peroxide for 2 weeks this summer(including ProActiv), and experienced a really bad breakout on my one cheek. So I really am at a loss of what to do.

Re: Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

Denise,

Honestly, I have always hated Retin A. I use it for a few days here and there and then stop (I know you shouldn't do that).

For the last 5 days I have been using it every night and I have been getting whiteheads on my jawbone and I noticed this morning a couple around my mouth, and yes I have been using only a pea sized amount.

I believe I told you the Plastic Surgeon had told me to use Retin A every night for the next 3 weeks before I do my TCA Peel.

I really don't know if I should blame it on Retin A or if it is because I have only been using my Proactiv once every other day (because I don't want to chance Proactiv affecting my TCA Peel).

When I asked the Surgeon if I could use the Proactiv, because I didn't want to break out in the next 3 weeks, he seemed a little hesitant, and then said it would be OK (he wasn't very familiar with Proactiv Solution).

He then said, "Well, the Retin A Could Break You Out."

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe they should just prescribe Retin A for Wrinkles Only!

Anyway thanks for the info.................................... ........<p>[This message has been edited by Jani (edited 10-27-2002).]

This is very interesting. It almost makes you wonderif they prescribe Retin A knowing yo'ull be back to get another pescription. Of course that means more money for the derms. Hmmmm..

I do have to say that Retin A Micro is doing a wonderful job... Everybody reacts to medication in a different way I guess..

Re: Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

I use Retin-A GEL and I don't think the gel has isopropyl myristate in it. I break out, but I think it's because my skin's purging....any thoughts? I'm happy with it so far, it's only been over a month though. If I do not stop breaking out by month 3, maybe I'll stop. However I am loving the way it totally cleared all my stubborn whiteheads.

Re: Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

My thoughts....

Using retin-A or any topical for a couples days on and then off is only going to make you look worse! All the person is doing is excerabating their acne by not seeing the treatment through the initial 6 week minimum. It may or may not have made your acne better, but then you won't really know for sure because you didn't stick it out.

Retin-A is a brand name. Tretinoin is the active drug in it. There are different formulations of tretinoin out there (retin-A micro, retin-A gel) that may not have the ingrediant mentioned above. There are also other types of retinoids out there like tazorac, differin, which are formulated differently to Retin-A cream.

Another thing is the dosage taken......How strong is the dosage. The lowest is 0.025%, middle, 0.05%, the strongest 0.1%. What are you using?

I know that I broke out on 0.05%. But then switched to 0.1% my acne got better.

Lastly, retinoids (trentinoin being a retinoid) help to rebuild collegen in your skin. Somebody mentioned scar formation being a result of retin-A. This may have to do with the fact that trentinoins rebuild collegen.

That is why it is marketed in Renova creams for older women.

By the way....I am 37 years old and most people think I am 26 (being carded often is a compliment). Maybe I can attribute this to the fact I have no wrinkles (that collegen building trentinoin) and I stayed out of the sun while I have used Retin-A micro. I am not tan looking, but fair. But I look a lot younger than women my age who sunned themselves.

Re: Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

Dear Plush:

If you are using the retin-A gel, what is the dosage strength?

I thought it only went up to 0.05%.

You may opt for Retin-A micro which is higher dosage strength of 0.1%.

Also, retin-A micro is good for those with sensitive and oily complextions. It is less creamy and I believe it is a sustained release of trentinoin in the skin (so less likely to cause redness).

PS...purging does make you break out more.

If I were you I would switch slowly to an all fruits/vegetables/very lean protein sources for a month and then do an all out purge. It would be less of a shock to your system and you will have already started cleaning your system from the diet change.

I guess that my assertion is that a lot of this so-called "purging" is just your skin breaking out from that pore clogging ingredient is what I'm saying.

It's not necessary. They should just put people with acne on Retin A micro, and people who are treating wrinkles and whatnot on regular Retin A. I think that some of the so-called "purging" (which I think is just pore clogging by that rated 5 for pore clogging capabilities ingredient) is just the Retin A itself causing unnecessary breakouts.

Re: Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

Thanks for your replies all.

TSB - I did ask my derma for Retin-A Micro but I don't think it has reached our shores yet. Therefore I was prescribed this 0,025% Gel for my cystic breakouts on my chin. They're all gone now. Can't feel those painful bumps anymore. Also the whiteheads are gone too - finally! I've been plagued with whiteheads for years, nothing worked.

My breakouts are ok, I can handle them. They pretty small and dry up fast when I put Retin-A on them. So far I am pretty happy with my progress. I'm very dry at times so I don't think a higher strength dosage is necessary for me at the moment since my skin is pretty clear till the recent said breakout.

Re: Wanna know why your acne gets worse with Retin A? Here's why.....

Dear Plush:

I think that in Australia, UK and other countries the highest strength of retin-A I have seen is 0.05%.

This in cream form.

Since you say you are "dry" at times on the 0.25% gel, why not try the cream at the 0.5%?

The cream feels totally different to the clear gel.

Another option.....Stay with the gel at 0.25% (put on at night) and then a very gentle antibacterial in the morning. Basically a two pronged attack at the zits. The retin-A gel provides exfoliation, thus allowing a gentle antibacterial to penetrate deeper into your skin to kill bacteria.

(This is the exfoliation/antibacterial approach is along the same lines of how proactiv works, but with different meds)

Klaron is a ultra gentle antibacterial prescribed to a lot of older acne and rosacea sufferers (who are hyper sensitive to just about everything) because it does not cause irritation. It is has the consistancy of a thin, watery aloe vera gel.

This is my regimin and I am basically clear of all zits. I may get a small zit now and then, but they go away in a day because of the klaron.

Thanks TSB - I'm definitely interested in Klaron! Will ask my derm about this on my next visit.
